Will society in the United States ever get to a point to where males and females will share public restrooms at the same time? Will society ever evolve on the issue of gender separation in public places?
Hello? It's a safety issue.
Women get assaulted by men hiding in women's bathrooms. Having co-ed bathrooms would only encourage that sort of thing. Unless they were staffed by police outside the door.
Hate unisex restrooms, women takes forever inside if they are individual bathrooms. The ones that share corridors invites sexual harassment. In today's age some places you can get in trouble for just staring or glancing at a woman I can't imagine sharing restroom.

There seems to be a stigma in society that men can't sexually control themselves around women and that most men will sexually assault women if given the opportunity.

Why do you want to? I already had enough awkward opposite sex related experiences with unisex bathrooms. Keep them separate. Men and women have different plumbings and bathrooms should be all about privacy. There's a reason men leave one urinal in between.

Unless a guy choices to use the toilet, most men are not going to have privacy when they use the urinals. Most urinals even today don't have dividers so there really isn't privacy for men when using the bathroom. Most urinals in male bathrooms look like these. Males a usually standing "shoulder to shoulder" when using public restrooms.
I'm not bashful by any stretch of the imagination. I joke all of the time about how I believe the TSA wouldn't be needed if everyone flew in the nude...
On topic >> When somebody leers at me at the urinal I usually say one of two things:
"Yeah, pretty impressive huh?"
"Since you're so interested, do you want to shake it for me when I'm done?"
In any case, while I don't personally care whether or not restrooms are free-for-all, I can understand the desire for privacy and/or gender segregation. Women in particular tend to be very uptight about their restroom usage and physical attributes in general; they're often messier and, honestly, those feminine hygiene products smell worse than just about anything I can think of.
I'll apologize in advance since I'm undoubtedly bound to attract some scornful wrath for my commentary.

I don't think that that is so much the issue as it would make the opportunity for those nut cases that much easier.
To answer the OP's question. I hope not. Us guys will never get use of the mirror!
