#1. It could be achieved by the end of business on Friday
How so?

Do they still teach kids to say no to drugs in school? This is a nation of instant gratification. Of course the only solution to the drug problem is to legalize it. God forbid we ever deny ourselves of anything...

It's more about being realistic than ideal, and recognizing when an effort (over 40 years in the making) has failed. They used to teach abstinence in schools and not make birth control available to teenagers, and teenage pregnancy was much higher in previous decades than it is now.

Reagan's War On Drugs was an ambitions venture, it made everyone involved extremely rich. It was a failed policy though in the spectrum of what was put out to the public as the "cause" of the war. It had quite the opposite effect actually.

Personally, I think it's too late for legalization or anything else like that. The cartels are big business, if the drugs fall in profits they will move on to the next profitable thing, sex trafficking , murder for hire, extortion , pick your flavor. I think the only thing we have left is to just close the border and ensure that more of the cartel business makes it into the states. It's sad to say but let the Mexican government deal with it. We need to protect our country. Create a DMZ corridor and build a 100ft wall the length of the border lined with Phlanx weaponry. That will help the border patrol, and let them search for all the other ways the cartels try to infiltrate, like tunnels and the like.
Phalanx CIWS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This won't happen because we are too soft and will just let them take over the border towns....

Another scenario would be to collaborate with the Mexican government and wage an all out war against the cartels... we would have to fight fire with fire and again I'm afraid we don't have the heart for that.

It is a very bad and scary situation , one that seems almost impossible to solve.

There's not many politician willing to tackle the issue, and even if someone were to have a really good way of dealing with the issue, government isn't the solution. They are so hopelessly grid-locked we will never get anything accomplished through voting.

It looks like there's a little bit of effort still taking place in the US:

Although I don't know what putting up posters is going to do to quell the masive flow of drugs into the San Diego area lol.

Not that any of these brought drugs into the country with them, but it has been known to happen:

Mostly, relax and take a deep breath.

Thanks for listening....
I can step out the front door and look right into Juarez. The cartels are fighting each other, not random US citizens on this side of the border. They have enough to keep themselves busy and aren't interested in getting larger more powerful forces lined up against them.

They're fighting over money, not principles. There's no money in taking on multiple levels of US law enforcement that they can't afford to buy off like the Mexican equivalents have been.

I'm glad you're down that way, Juarez was one of the harder hit areas as far as Cartel violence is concerned. So you're saying that it hasn't spilled into your neck of the woods? Do you have occasional run ins with immigrants (drug mules too) or is it pretty quiet?
