It may seem a punitive move, but if the obesity epidemic does not abate, then what measures should be taken to ensure it does?

Should there be taxes on fast food? Should fast food even be outlawed?

Let me get this straight, you want the government to use lawmaking to help/force people to diet??

REALLY??

It isn't "fatty" foods that has caused the obesity epidemic. It's the fact that there is sugar (high fructose corn syrup) in almost everything that is processed. End the corn subsidies, that's the right way to start; our federal government ensures that corn syrup is the cheapest calorie available to Americans. But this will not happen, because politicans across the board make big bucks from the corn lobby. (And most Americans either don't care or can't be bothered to learn the truth).

It isn't the fat, it's the corn sugar.

This is a great debate, just like seat belt or helmet laws.

I don't know.

I second the "corn syrup" for one. While it is not the cause of obesity, it surely is a great helper and check the labels, it is everywhere! No taxing fatty foods would do nothing for them and a better approach would be to educate children on nutrition beginning in elementary school and require parents with obese children to attend parenting classes that stress proper diet and exercise. No more taxes!

But the obesity epidemic continues to rise. Why is this, and what should be done to stop it?

Education is not working. What other options can be pursued?

Well, the government could quit subsidizing the production of grains, particularly corn. All we need is Big Brother figuring out what we can/can't eat.

It is indeed like helmet and seat belt laws - and all if it is bunk. Like Jefferson, I am more willing to put up with the inconveniences associated with too much freedom, than those associated with too little.

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it." -actual quote.

Correct! In addition to HFCS, chemical additives can also result in the body using fat as a means of PROTECTING the body from damage. Outlawing processed garbage and HFCS would go a long way to improving the overall dietary health of this country.

How would you define junk food or fast food? Is a cheeseburger from McDonald's unhealthier than a cheeseburger from an expensive bistro? Would a cup of white rice -- which has little nutritive value -- be considered as unhealthy as an amount of potato chips with the same number of calories? What about a meal of broiled chicken and steamed vegetables from Boston Market? Is that unhealthy enough to ban or tax?

This kind of assumes that the power elite are actually interested in whats best for America. I don't think they are. They are consumed by power and control. Folding the world into the Chinese model makes power and control much easier. Now we have Obama and the WSJ lauding Red China?

If something causes a problem....kill it. Here we have Obama's boss, Brzezinkski, telling his colleagues that it is "infinitely easier to kill than to contro.l"
