Seriously? You think the word "sucks" is an obscenity? What's wrong with our society that people feel the need to get offended over every little word? Words have as much power as you give them. Stop being so nit-picky.

Not an obscenity. No one thinks of the literal meaning.

Vulgar? Really? Maybe it's your mind that's vulgar giving the word a meaning that's not there.

It's one of those words that has changed it's level of acceptability through the decades. Those of us who are older (I'm in my 50s) were taught that "sucks" was NOT a word to be used. It was considered to be nearly as bad as "the F word," (which is now heard anywhere and everywhere.)

I don't think younger people give "sucks" a second thought. As someone else said, it's pretty much like saying something stinks.

But then again, I wonder if younger people, who frequently say it, would say it to their grandparents, pastor, in a professional setting, etc? Maybe they do know it's "a kinda bad word."

it's an old phrase.

A sow has two false teats (no milk ducts). The phrase " that sucks the hind teat' means that you are working at something that gives no satisfaction, shortened to "that sucks".

has nothing to do with Bill

It still sounds vulgar to me and I would rather not hear it, especially since most young people do not know the origins of the saying

Everyone saying sucks is an obscenity or they don't like it must be over thirty or something. I'm in highschool right now, and saying something sucks is one of the most vanilla or innocent ways you can say you don't like something. From a young persons perspective. It doesn't imply anything either, it's just something you say.

What about saying that something "blows"? Do you kids consider that as innocuous as "sucks"?

^^ Exactly. It's the OP (a teacher) who has the dirty mind giving the word a meaning that's not there.

There is no such thing as a "bad word". How can a word be bad? People get offended over stupid **** too often nowadays.

Let me guess, you're gonna report me for saying ****. lol
