I've read on this forum many times that the prison system is broken. I've come to that conclusion myself a long time ago before ever joining this site. So how do we fix it?
Could we use an arena, give the guilty party some close quarter weapons and release animals in there with them? I think if people knew they might have to face lions, bears, gorillas, etc. instead of getting some long drawn-out jail sentence, they'd be less motivated to commit crimes.
The prison system is broken for many reasons, none of which can be cured by making people lunch for an animal lol. Unless they are illegal poacher/trophy hunters then let the lions and bears have at them!
The problem is the privatization of the prison system along with the war on drugs and ridiculous sentencing. People are going to jail for decades over a few ounces of pot or cocaine and the investors make bank on it.
Really the only people who should be locked up are violent criminals like rapists, abusers, murderers, molesters etc. Everyone else just needs to be on probation, serve community service, go through rehabilitation then sent to college or a trade school or given a good job. If they graduate or a good employee for a few years, then their record is wiped clean. People reoffend because when their sentence is over, they are just tossed out on the streets with no money, little or no friend or family support and a criminal record. They don't know what else to do or how else to live. Norway takes this rehab route and they hardly ever have reoffenders. So rehab and no more "for profit" prisons!

so the man who stole my chain saw and pawned it for a 10 $ hit of crack should not be in jail .. the same man who stole my power drill .. my skill saw .. my paint gun .. my 2000 dollar coin collection which he told me he pawned for 40 bucks .. the same man who wrote 1000 dollars worth of stolen checks on my account should not be in jail .. i had to build a 6 foot high fence around my property to keep this fine fellow out ...

Did you read everything I said or stopped at the part you didn't like? If we continue with the way things are, then yes, the only way to keep someone like that guy from reoffending is to lock him up. That is not what the OP asked though. He asked how to fix the prison system, which is to make prison not for profit and to rehab convicted criminals. If the fellow who continuously robbed you had been entered into a thorough rehab program when he was first convicted, he wouldn't have done it again. Locking up people as punishment doesn't work and our system has proven that a mllion times over.
Gorillas are getting to be on rather short supply on planet Earth and I wouldn't be surprised to find out if other "man eaters" aren't in the same boat.
Aside from anything else, it's rather a poor use of limited resources.
The best way to solve the overcrowded prisons is outsource the prisoners. We already outsourced thousands of highly skilled workers who are truly valuable to our country, so why can't we send all the rapists, bank robbers, murderers, drug dealers to a third world country where they could be locked up for a fraction of the cost? I know it won't happen because it's not politically correct, but even the idea of spending 20 years in Siberia or Afghanistan would stop some people from robbing a convenience store.

The problem with that is most people don't think that are ever going to get caught. Also criminals have families and children. It's bad enough to have a parent in jail; you should at least be able to visit them.
Not to mention, some of those convicts are bulked-up bodybuilders who might be able to kill an animal in a 1:1 life and death battle. No more Cecil the dead lion killed for sport stories, please.
I would add that the de-politicizing of the justice system that now provides a vote-getting incentive for railroading and locking up low risk and petty offenders. I'm guessing that Norway and other lower incarceration rate countries do not have prosecutors, sheriffs and judges running for reelection....or for higher office.
