I was wondering why is it that people can make fun of Mexican Americans and get away with it. Meanwhile, if you make fun of other groups you get reprimanded for it. For example, people could say stuff to Mexicans jokingly saying things like "you could mow my lawn" and get away with it. However if someone were to say to a black "hey do you have drugs you could sell me?" it would be seen as racist. A celebrity has gotten into trouble for talking about blacks in a negative way and got into a lot of trouble for it. Meanwhile it is socially acceptable to look down and make fun of Mexicans. It is no longer "cool" to make fun of gays or to openly disapprove of their lifestyle but there is still a green light to make fun of Mexicans. I guess Mexican Americans just have to be more vocal if they want to respected just like the blacks did in the Civil Rights Movement. Or it could be like the Irish and the Italians that were ridiculed and discriminated against but eventually became mainstream. I don't know if Mexican Americans will follow the path of the Irish and Italian Americans or whether they will be like the African Americans who are to this day an oppressed community that has been excluded from the mainstream, unlike the Irish and the Italians who are now seen as "white" even when they weren't before. If Mexican Americans follow the path of African Americans in terms of assimilation (and by assimilation I mean a two way process of assimilation in which the mainstream absorbs the Mexican Americans as their own as well, which hasn't really worked for the African Americans since they are seen as "another race" even though some groups who weren't seen as white are now seen as white), I sure hope at least one day it won't be considered "cool" or "acceptable" to make fun of Mexicans or Hispanics.

Other groups are still the butt of jokes...ugly people, fat people, Polish people, Swedish people (ever heard Ole and Lena jokes?), blondes....it'seems not just Mexicans. Why? I don't know. People have forgotten what they learned in kindergarten or church? Not a generalization, but some people do things that make themselves easy targets, regardless of race.
