I saw a "who wore it best" page in a magazine and 3 women wore the same jacket that had long black feathers attached to the bottom hem. Why is it okay for women to wear genuine feathers and not genuine fur?

Because the fur trade was run out of the US, other countries are barbarically harvesting fur. At least the industry could be regulated here.

Maybe this should be in the debate section.

The same reason most people consider it okay to wear wool. Birds naturally shed their feathers, so feathers (and wool) can be collected without harming the animal.

Yup. You don't have to kill the bird to get the feathers; they molt, and grow new feathers

Agreed with the other 2 answers. It was pretty obvious.

Feathers and wool don't require torture and/ or slaughter of an animal to get. Pretty simple.

Not to mention you can get faux fur that looks just as good, that no animals had to suffer for.

Also, it's ok for women to wear real fur, and plenty of women do. We had a thread here last year with a female poster showing a real fur coat she was planning to buy.

But like anything, some people disagree with it, some don't, and some don't give a crap. But anyone is free to wear what they want.

perhaps an apples to apples comparison would be....................."why is it ok to wear leather but not to wear fur "

Well the argument for that. The cow was already killed for meat, since beef is a natural food people eat. So the leather is just taking what was left over, and using it after the cow had already been killed for food. And killing for food isn't malicious, and seen as natural -animals do that. As opposed to just wanting the fur off of an animal so you can have people wear it -where the killing is seen as needless.

But is that really how feathers are "harvested"? That doesn't sound very efficient for a business - to keep hundreds of birds and have people running around collecting the ones that have fallen off before they get trampled on?

I don't know for a fact but depending on the type of feather, more likely is that whatever industry is "processing" the birds for other purposes sells the feathers to those who use them for decoration, animal feed, etc. Businesses have to be efficient otherwise they won't be profitable. Any business processes what they need to and sells off whatever "trash" they don't need to whatever other business needs it. So by your definition, pretty much any business is ethical? As long as the buyer's heart is pure?

As long as you eat the elephant meat you can use the tusks and hide, guilt-free?

I'm not sure if you're just being flippant or you really believe that. I found the item I saw in the magazine. If you think they can mass produce this garment with feathers picked up off the ground.... ummm....
