Which is more important: freedom of speech, or avoiding offending others? (drugs, free speech)

All of this, there are consequences or in other words supporting the idea that, "Now that you've said something I don't agree with, I'm going to try to ruin you personally and professionally or sit back and gloat while others do so" is just an expression of fascists who don't have the intellect or decency to truly understand the great American philosophy of free speech, which was literally revolutionary in its first days. In Europe, where members of most of our founding communities came from, people who spoke freely were ruined or even killed. America's founders knew that and created legal free speech to stop that from happening here. Free speech means not only one can speak, but one can do so without being ruined. If you don't get that and respect that, you're not really deserving of the freedoms America provides.
They're not mutually exclusive. You can be outspoken without being offensive.
Not always. Some people look for reasons to be offended. They have the bar set very low. For many people any mention of race will result in their being called a racist. Any mention of sexuality will result in their being called a homophobe. A person cannot say they disagree with same sex marriage, whatever their reason without being called a bigot.
No, you can walk away, you can cover your ears, you can go to sleep; whatever floats your boat. However, you cannot deny my right to free speech just cause YOU don't like what I'm saying!
Remember, the 1st amendment does not need to protect speech you like, only speech you don't like.
Dumb question. We already have free speech. It's a moot point. It's your legal right to be an offensive bigot. Just understand that you are not legally protected from actions others may take in response to your free speech.
The problem is that people don't have a true understanding of the Constitutional right to free speech. It does not mean that you can say anything you want without anyone becoming angry or facing repurcussions (personal, professional, etc.) It simply means that you won't be arrested or otherwise legally prosecuted for what you say.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but with some in our lives, we need to buffer so much as I'm not going to mouth off to people who mean something to me. What does that gain. Once out of the mouth, can't take it back. Just like once doing a surgery you can't undo it.

True, and there's also not necessarily the "entanglement" that the thread assumes. For instance, although Trump has consistently been flagrantly offensive, some of his ideas were stated less offensively by others in the past.

Don't people have free speech to call you a bigot? Why are you being a baby because people don't agree with you? You want to insult people but can't take their honest response? Snowflake.
