Another poster did mention it was previously used against blacks and has now somehow been flipped and is some afrocentric concept. Back then, black blood was vile poisonous that it taints the whole lot. Now, it's great and powerful and overtakes the whole lot.
Because another true concept exists in America: "None of us is free until all of us are free."
Being half-white doesn't count when you're dealing with a racist...which is what Jesse Williams says he discovered as a teenager.
Why have we become so obsessed with labels nowadays especially in the US?
I remember, not too long ago, where in attempts to reconcile differences we all focused on the things that made us similar. Now, we focus on what makes us different. We want to be labeled different. We don't want to associate with the rest. There's hardly anymore Americans growing up. We're all hispanic, panamanian transgender, democratic, socialist, prochoice or we're white, german, males republican NRA members. (just fictitious examples) That in of itself is an issue, IMO. Whenever something comes up on the news; black male did this. White male did that.
Rant over.
I think the one drop rule is absurd. It is such an obvious remnant of pre-civil rights era US and I have no clue why people continue to even dignify it. Back then, black blood was vile poisonous that it taints the whole lot. Now, it's great and powerful and overtakes the whole lot. If we use it today, why are we only focusing on african blood though? Why not asian, why not white? What does one drop of asian blood do? What does one drop of white blood do? Why doesn't one drop of asian blood taint a pure african lot? Why can't this concept just die already.
I have heard some other bizzare claims of what determines race. My wife is black, her brother obviously black, but his wife is white. I was told that the brother's wife was told by her doctor, in clear terms, that her children are black because the father is black. In essense, whatever the father is is what the children are. Nothing else matters. I don't know what kind of quack he was but I see nothing medical about that opinion. Or perhaps it's just some kind of mental gymnastics they came up with to determine their identity
It wasn't whatever race the father was assigned in America, it was the race of the parent who was lower on the social-political scale that mattered up until the point that Latinos started to be broken out from other so-called races as its own race/ethnic group.
Hence Tiger Woods being Black along with other things along with Thai was assigned Black by the culture. Black being seen as lower than Asian with Hitler's master race at the pinnacle and African at the bottom. That legacy of the single drop rules is finally ending.
To me the "one drop rule" IS people determining your race by your appearance. I mean there was no DNA waaay back, the "one drop rule" was and is a visual thing.

We are in our 30s and 20s. Their kids are under 10. How does a physician instruct a patient that their children are medically one race rather than another? They all have some of the fathers fretures so no postman jokes. Eldest looks Central American or “Mexican†middle looks “white†and youngest looks “mixedâ€

The one-drop rule was a matter of what records were available.
Birth records, school records, family bibles, community memory--if there was any knowledge or record of any non-white relationships, the one-drop rule dictated the person to be considered non-white, regardless of visual appearance.
That's why Herbert Hoover and Carol Channing kept their black relationships secret, despite appearing completely white.
OP, the one-drop rule was a historical standard that was relevant to a certain era. Nobody's counting, these days. Society has moved on. It became irrelevant after the separate drinking fountains (etc.) were eliminated.

Well, after all the old judges are finally dead.
The one-drop rule was used in court at least as recently as 1980, when a Louisiana woman was denied her request to be classified as white on her birth certificate because of a black ancestor four generations back. A Louisiana law, repealed only in1983, assigned residents as “colored” if one thirty-second of their ancestry included African descent.
