I doubt if there will be any serious public discussion of the topic except on message boards like this. For one thing, the religious right will squelch any attempts to bring attention to overpopulation because it contradicts the Bible. And the American capitalist mindset values increased population growth because it means increased sales and higher profits. So there's nothing in it for our corporate and government overlords, either. It is up to us thoughtful concerned citizens to follow our conscience and do what we can raise awareness of what we're doing to this planet.

Population increases were promoted by kings, warlords and dictators of all sorts, including those who claimed religious justification, as a means of increasing the number of workers, soldiers and adherents. It was all a matter of power and domination, on a competitive basis. Now, we don't seem able to shut it off. Nature will have its way in the end and we'll pay dearly for our inability to manage ourselves.

I view the current population to be troubling. Once natural resources are consumed faster than they can replenish, we are overpopulated, in my opinion. Instead of science telling us how many people earth can theoretically house, how about using common sense instead; It may be able to house X amount of people, but do you really want to live like that? The current population could easily be reduced by about 4 billion people in my opinion, so yes, I find the population growth to be very troubling.

The population will peak at about 10 billion. Improved economics, health care and education has proven that populations level off when those three reach a point of sustainment. In 20-50 years we will reach a point where those will be common around the globe and everything will level out. This is really not complicated nor troubling.

The extinction level event is already well under way, but most people don't notice. It will take decades, if not centuries, but the Earth is already far past its carrying capacity for human population. Before the human population collapses, the only animals left will be domestic animals and vermin.

Global warming has the potential to be as destructive as a total nuclear war. It's not clear what happened during the Permian extinction, but global temps rose 10 degrees, 90% of all sea life died and 70% of all land life. If world population was less than a billion we would have less need for fossil fuels, and we wouldn't be clearing a million acres of rainforest a year for food production.

The survivors will be left inhabiting a ruined world. We won't see it, but our grandchildren and great grandchildren will.

This is old info. People just keep worrying about everything and they pay no attention to feedback, data and research. I think that is the problem, from anti-vaxers, to racists to flat earthers. There is no shortage of idiots making the world we live in more challenging for those of us that have to deal with their nihilistic, cynical and ignorant views.

Some people make things happen, some people complain.

Where do you get this nonsense from? The limiting factor is energy, and there is plenty of that from the sun to go around. You are living in an age of abundance, the fact that humanity is at this moment not managing the earth's biology correctly may pose a problem now, but we can overcome it. 65 million years ago that extinction event wiped out like 80% of all life and it bounced back. That is the resiliency of life.

I’m always hearing how everybody should eat healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, but I always wonder what if every single person decided to actually do that? Would there really be enough of those foods to go around? Maybe there’s only enough food go around because most people eat stuff that’s loaded with preservatives and highly processed?

It’s a fact worth repeating. 200,000 years to reach one billion. 200 years to reach 6 billion. And in the past 20 years, we’ve added an additional 1.8 billion.

World population hits 6 billion - US news - Only - September 1999: Terminal Planet - Population | NBC News

Back in 1999, they estimated that the world population of 2050 would be 8.9 billion. Clearly, that was an underestimation.

I’m concerned about how the world’s resources can sustain such a level of growth. You have countries like Nigeria where in some provinces, the fertility rate is over 8 (and the lowest is 5). It seems bizarre that more isn’t being done to address this problem.

Actually, it has. Throughout Asia, the fertility rate has been below 2 (replacement level for some time). Even India has a fertility rate of 2.2. The population problem at this point is almost exclusively confined to Sub-Saharan Afrida.

If demographers are correct, we're actually looking at peak human population about mid-century, followed by a rapid decline.
