There are plenty of people making masks that donate them to the hospital in my area. I just purchased a box of masks on Amazon for $20. If my job couldn't provide it - then I'd buy my own to protect myself.

So IF the final U.S. death toll from COVID-19 turns out to be about 150,000 (or less), if you figure in the despair of those who lost their jobs or businesses and might not recover, the possible violence due to shortages, the increased domestic abuse resulting from people being forced to stay home to some extent, medical personnel losing their lives because of caring for the sick, the stress and worry about loved ones, and the trillions of dollars that taxpayers will end up paying -- and also knowing that the usual number of deaths annually in the U.S. is about 3,000,000 -- do you think the extreme measures taken to prevent possibly hundreds of thousands more deaths will have been worth it?
P.S. As I personally have not formed an opinion on this question yet, I will not be debating anyone who responds, but I will most definitely be reading any responses that this post receives, so thanks in advance.
It is worth it to keep the death toll from being 500,000 instead of 100,000. Absolutely.

Where are the masks and other protective gear doctors/nurses say they can't get, the respirators our hospitals are desperately trying to get (CUOMO recently responded to FEMA's allocation to NY of 400 respirators: "What am I going to do with 400 respirators, when I need 30,000?"), and the masks the public needs for self-protection? Why is the US rated 26th in quality of health care globally, belowCosta Rica?

I challenge anyone to find a modern nation (not a third world nation) other than the US that does not have universal health care. Is this what "American exceptionalism" is about? The right to die because you aren't rich an you aren't poor enough to get on Medicaid and so you fall between the cracks because you can't afford your medication?

Would you rather have brain surgery by a doctor that makes $2MM a year here or some government doctor there? Yeah, I thought so. Why do celebrities come here from Europe for complex surgeries?

The fifth largest nation in the world by GDP doesn't have it. They are trying but as of now they have fewer people on government healthcare than the US (only 4 million people as of 2019). As it stands, the US has over 118 million people on government healthcare (medicare or medicaid), which is more people than many countries have in their entire population.
I won't name the country because you're free to google it, and I suspect you'll put a xenophobic spin on it due to your comment about "first world" countries (again, it's only four lower than the US in GDP...)
But it's not as dire in the US as the media would leave you to believe.
