I think Yom Kippur should be a national holiday. Not because of the religious significance, but because everyone in the US needs a day of Atonement.
Where I grew up - Long Island NY - there was no school on the High Holy Days. Also true at all State University of NY colleges and universities.
I'm not sure if that should be a National holiday - some places have very sparse or non existent Jewish populations and making in a National Holiday would be unnecessary.
I think Election Day should be a National Holiday both to insure that everyone has the chance to vote and to acknowledge the duty of Americans to cast their votes. It sets an example.

Seriously, though, it's not such a facetious idea to have some day of observance for people of all faiths (as well as for people who don't adhere to any religion) to seek the forgiveness of their family, friends, and others for past wrongs done to them, and mend broken bridges. We need that more than ever, these days.
NOTE: By national holidays, I mean those days in which most businesses would be expected to be closed and give their employees the day off with pay. (Where I have worked, that has usually meant, at the minimum, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, while employees of banks and federal offices also being given such days as Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, Presidents Day, and Veterans Day off as well.)
Only four of our national holidays commemorate something on the actual date that these things occurred. They being, New Year's Day (the first day of the year), Independence Day (the signing of the Declaration of Independence, i.e. the "birthday" of our country), Veteran's Day (the ending of World War I), and Christmas (the birth of Christ, and yes, I know that it's almost certain that he wasn't actually born on that day, but that's the day we've chosen).
I'd like to see other holidays commemorate extremely important events in our nation's history, such as September 11 (the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington) and December 7 (the attack on Pearl Harbor). The birthday of our first president seems worth celebrating, as does that of our foremost civil rights leader. But I'd rather have them celebrated on the actual days that they happened (February 22 and January 15, respectively) than have them float just to make a long weekend. The only two holidays that I think should float should be the ones that mark the unofficial start and end of summer, our busiest vacation season. (I'd move Memorial Day to fall on a Friday, because to me it's more symbolic to start the vacation season on a Friday and end it on a Monday, as the current Labor Day does.)
And that just leaves Thanksgiving, which is actually my favorite holiday of the year, because I really like the idea of setting aside a day to give thanks and to enjoy the company of one's family over a large meal. I guess I'm going against my own thought about floating holidays, but I suppose it makes sense to keep this one on the fourth Thursday of November instead of fixing a date, since there's really no fixed date on which to give thanks that's more important than any other fixed date.
You should move to a state where every day is 4/20 day.
Why?
I can smoke whenever I want here.
