At one point I was told I needed a prescription for a hearing aid. Why? Afraid I'll overdose on hearing? Become resistant to hearing aids over time?

Hearing aids are computerized to be adjusted by a professional to each patient's specific needs. Hearing is a complex phenomenon. An audiologist needs to assess the precise nature of the patient's hearing loss, the type of environment in which the patient functions on a daily basis, and then program the hearing aid to the patient's specific needs.
