OP, your wrote your post in '08. Here is my update in '16.
I was born in the 1950's. Over my life I've seen great advances as well as declines in the USA. If you compare the
American model on the 1950's to today I'd have to vote the USA is headed in a steady decline. (At least for the greater part of its citizens.)
I live on the gulf coast, and I know a lot of oil field workers that have been layed off over the past couple of years. Trust me, there are no "green energy" jobs coming for them. Either the oil jobs come back, or they're forced to find some other job making 1/3 the pay that they used to make.
I didn't say anything about getting rid of jobs nor did I say anything about "green" energy. I said I don't want regulation getting rid of just so Trump and friends can widen their wallets. I also said that we need to invest in cleaner energy. That is not the same thing as saying we need to get rid of dirty. We obviously need to be investing more in rapid transit. Does that mean I want highways to stop being built? No.
And my adaption comment wasnt "take all the people out of oil and teach them how to do hydro." I'm saying for people that you know that have been laid off from oil, we can create more jobs in the energy sector, and they get first priority.
No, I'm saying 1. what the Obama administration has done should be left alone, 2. effort should be put into teaching these people that have lost oil jobs a new trade in the energy sector, the same way we've taught teachers how to adopt technology like ipads, Google and Kahoot, smartboards, and soon VR into the classroom, and 3. the climate nay-sayers need to work together with the sayers to work on viable solutions. Put personal beliefs aside.
Trump has filled his cabinet with not only climate change deniers, but with people who have strong ties to the oil industry. All this is going to do is remove the lobbying process. Exxon won't need to lobby, Exxon's already on the cabinet.
These guys are looking out for profits, not the greater good. We obviously need the oil industry, but we also need the guys in charge to be smart about it. Do I think we should shut down all the oil refineries and build hundred acre windfarms? Hell no, I'm not some green, granola nut, but I am tired of it getting hotter year after year.
Things like California's cow fart regulation is ridiculous to me, but it's also ridiculous to let big oil, big pharma, big junk food, big etc run amuck with no consequences, and that's what I feel Trump is going to do - take away consequences. He needs to stick with the Paris Agreement and innovate the American energy sector.
There's an obvious agenda here: deregulate and lower outside dependence. All I want is for the agenda to be dropped and for both sides to sit down and work together on something for the country (world). By what Trump has done so far, obviously that's not his interest.
Um, Trump is not only filling his cabinet with climate change deniers, but he is also filling his cabinet with creationists. We are getting so many anti-science politicians and that's one of the many reasons why this country is going downhill.

I'm aware. Just didn't bother to bring it up. I won't be surprised if NASA gets the ax.
Two answers:
In 2008 when this thread was started (and for the last 8-years), it seemed clear to me that this country was rapidly heading down the path of socialism and a corrupt, elitist form of government benefiting only the politicians. It truly looked like an almost hopeless downward spiral ... which has played-out for 8-years.
Now, in 2016, I feel more optimistic than at any time over the past 8-years. Contrary to today's 'snowflake' thinking, I believe America is on the verge of a period of prosperity and hope --- no longer dominated by arrogant, hate-mongering, politically correct, leftist ideology.
we are nearing the end of 8 years where a president got elected on "change" and worked very hard to divide this country along racial lines and income lines.
You Obama supporters voted for " change" and you got the above mentioned changes.
Seems Hillary could not win the presidency on those coat tails ,however

Optimistic, pssh, not with Trump. I'm now more pessimistic than ever, and I can explain more reasons why this country is going downhill.
1. Poverty and unemployment has risen in the United States.
2. So many cities in the Rust Belt, such as Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Gary, and even Cairo, Illinois have suffered from mass urban decay.
3. So many manufacturing jobs have left the U.S., for foreign countries, thanks to those bullsh*t free trade agreements.
4. The economy still sucks, and yet to see it improve.
This country has gone downhill more than ever, and Trump will only bring it downhill some more. Last, but not least, neither politicians on the left or the right, can do any good for this country.

Yes because there clearly werent any race and wealth issues under Bush. Or Clinton. Or Bush. Or Reagan.
It all started with Obama and will end with Trump.

Trump, IDK. He wants to make the US, a Christian theocracy, which would be utterly disastrous. Trump is a all about supporting bigots, such as racists, homophobes, xenophobes, etc. And Trump is all about supporting anti-science farts, such as creationists, climate change denialists, alchemists, etc. This country surely has chosen a bad president.
