I believe those words come from Lincoln's Gettysburg address and not the Constitution... but that's a trivial matter.

I thought President FDR said them on TV in 1929 after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Well, I guess my six year-old niece wouldn't be allowed to vote. And at least today, a citizen can't vote unless he or she has registered.

I've often heard that true democracies usually fail, though I haven't seen anything to back that up. We usually use the word, "democracy" loosely, even though our own form of government is a republic. I'd appreciate some clarification from somebody who knows more than I do about the differences between democracy and republic.

Democracy in its truest form is mob rule.
Purely will of the majority.

The Republic has safeguards built in to avoid mob rule. Our Constitution is the foundation of those safeguards. It is eroded over time by special interests and the slide into socialism where the majority will erase individualism and individual rights, but it at least provided a starting point.

The Democratic component of our system is the entitlement to vote that is extended to most citizens.

Why aren't they? Because it's all as a result of greed and corruption and they are all guilty. They blow the cover they also blow the whistle on themselves.

See statements like that do not belong on this forum

The "they are greedy" nonsense is BS. It may be true for some.. and not all. I'm looking for more intelligent answers than that!

Ok, let's put it like this. For any politician to run successfully for the Senate, the Congress, or the Presidency they have to take money. The people that are offering the money are people with an agenda, and they are people who will expect something in return. It costs upwards of 100 million dollars to run for president today, thirty for the senate in any state of considerable size and weight. Yesterday, 700 billion dollar Bailout was pushed through the House, but not before another 140 bililion in corporate quid pro quo, more commonly known as pork, was stuffed into it's back pockets. If you don't think that the American political system is sick, sick to the point of inoperable, then you are living in either ignorance or denial. They ALL take money. And it ain't for free.
