The OP just doesn't know what's going on in other countries because the news media doesn't cover it. Its as though they thought the news gave a complete true picture of what is going on in the world. Recently I saw a show about prisons in Russia. They showed on prison called Black Dolphin. The place was full of men convicted of multiple murderers, guys who had eaten some of their victims. So, no it happens in other countries also.

You are very right. See here:

Africa has more Serial-Killers than U.S. and Europe - Afrik-news.com : Africa news, Maghreb news - The african daily newspaper

"Stéphane Bourgoin, who feeds his website on daily basis with information concerning this phenomenon on the continent notes that 'African serial killers are generally less mobile as a result of their culture and also due to their way of life. And while American serial killers kill across state lines, Africans engage in these activities in a city or their areas of residence.'
Their geographic limitation means that they can easily be identified. But the continent lacks mean to protect citizens against serial killers, that is, 'with the exception of South Africa which keeps fingerprints and DNA profiles and Algeria which is soon to follow'. Apart from South Africa, the continent lacks profilers and the police is not always well trained in that field. 'Without these tools, it is difficult to link crimes that do not necessarily look like they come from the same person. There are certainly more serial killers in Africa than in western countries', Stefan tells Afrik-News.com.

They said that modern culture creates the breeding ground for certain kinds of people (genetically equipped with certain psychological sensitivities) to go over the edge.

Most people manage to adapt to the system and NOT be serial killers but that doesn't mean their quality of life is great. Your typical modern person is on some kind of substance or has some kind of addiction, whether that's drugs, prescription meds, alcohol, food addiction, shopaholism, workaholism, porn addiction, electronics addiction, etc.
These are ways of coping with the culture. For the most sensitive of them, none of these would work...and some will go over the edge.
Even third world cultures can produce serial kilers, so prescription drugs and electronics do not appear to be neccessary or sufficient factors in their evolution.

From the FBI:

FBI — Serial Murder
  • The majority of serial killers are not reclusive, social misfits who live alone. They are not monsters and may not appear strange. Many serial killers hide in plain sight within their communities.
  • Contrary to popular belief, serial killers span all racial groups. There are white, African-American,
  • Hispanic, and Asian serial killers. The racial diversification of serial killers generally mirrors that of the overall U.S. population.
  • All serial murders are not sexually-based. There are many other motivations for serial murders including anger, thrill, financial gain, and attention seeking.
  • Most serial killers have very defined geographic areas of operation. They conduct their killings within comfort zones that are often defined by an anchor point (e.g. place of residence, employment, or residence of a relative).
  • It has been widely believed that once serial killers start killing, they cannot stop. There are, however, some serial killers who stop murdering altogether before being caught. In these instances, there are events or circumstances in offenders’ lives that inhibit them from pursuing more victims. These can include increased participation in family activities, sexual substitution, and other diversions.
  • Another myth that exists is that serial killers have either a debilitating mental condition, or they are extremely clever and intelligent.
  • As a group, serial killers suffer from a variety of personality disorders, including psychopathy, anti-social personality, and others. Most, however, are not adjudicated as insane under the law.
  • As serial killers continue to offend without being captured, they can become empowered, feeling they will never be identified. As the series continues, the killers may begin to take shortcuts when committing their crimes. This often causes the killers to take more chances, leading to identification by law enforcement. It is not that serial killers want to get caught; they feel that they can’t get caught.
"Symposium attendees agreed that there is no single identifiable cause or factor that leads to the development of a serial killer. Rather, there are a multitude of factors that contribute to their development. The most significant factor is the serial killer’s personal decision in choosing to pursue their crimes."

" ... attendees did identify certain traits common to some serial murderers, including sensation seeking, a lack of remorse or guilt, impulsivity, the need for control, and predatory behavior. These traits and behaviors are consistent with the psychopathic personality disorder."

"Regardless of the motive, serial murderers commit their crimes because they want to. The exception to this would be those few killers suffering from a severe mental illness."

Classes of motives: Anger, Criminal Enterprise, Financial gain, Ideology, Power/thrill, Psychosis, Sexually-based

The article then outlines the forensic investigation approach and coordination of various resources needed to nvestigate serial murders.

It appears, as some other posters have indicated, that America may not necessarily have more serial murderers, but it may be uniquely capable of finding them.

I apologize for reviving this old thread but I saw new infos about Stéphane Bourgoin and that guy who searched for serial killer was a serial liar from what I read on this article from the British newspaper The Sunday-Times.

For over three decades, France’s best known expert on serial killers has riveted TV viewers, lectured police and published books on the manipulative minds of murderers.

Now Stéphane Bourgoin has admitted he faked his biography, invented his CV and lied about his exploits as an international profiler.

Bourgoin’s confession comes after web investigators and newspapers looked into the truth of a larger-than-life career that supposedly began when his young wife, Eileen, was butchered by a serial killer in Los Angeles in 1976.

That must have been a horrible experience. I wish you had a gun then and coulda put the killer down instead of helplessly sitting there hoping to not be shot.

As usual there is no simple single root cause. Disintegration of social norms and human values, coupled with easy access to weapons of mass lethality, fueled by antisocial memes easily propagated on the Internet, mix in substance abuse, and as other posters have said little or no attention to mental health - it is the perfect breeding ground for sociopaths and psychotics.

Is there, though? Really?

Because I live in America, that's just the majority of the stuff I hear about.

There's enough crazy to go around. I'm sure if you actually went looking, you'll find there's plenty of crazy going on all over the world.

Cause in third world countries they don't have organizations like the FBI that are highly funded with advanced technology. I'm going to assume alot of serial killers are simply never found out in many places. The United States is probably the most violent first world country in the world but we are nowhere close to being on the same level as places like El Salvador or Liberia.

If you look back decades ago there were no school shootings despite access to guns. It was even legal to have machine guns and many veterans brought machine guns home after wartime. Those guns were not the government issued types but ones they had acquired from the battlefields.

So, despite the hysterical outrage, the reason for school shootings is not access to guns - it is cultural. Also, the reason so many shooters choose an AR-15 is because it is touted by the media - it is the rampage shooter's version of an iPhone.

Those responsible for cultural decline are the ones who blame guns the most. It is their values that have resulted in the decay.

As to serial killers - well, it is impossible to determine how many serial killers there are throughout the world but we do have some idea what is happening in the US because we have better records. So, it cannot be claimed with any degree of certainty that there are more of them in the US simply because we know how many we might have while other places have no idea.

The reasons for serial killers existing could possibly be explained by their behavior patterns going undetected. So if a country had a process whereby student behaviors were monitored and red flags were discovered, then perhaps the individuals could go under psychiatric evaluation as a preventive measure.

It's due to our state of the art reporting systems. Every country in the world has mass killers and serial killers, but we do a very fine job of identifying them and tracking them and reporting them, where most countries lack the technologies to do so.

There are far more mass killers in the border towns of Mexico, or in the prisons of Brasil, than there are here, but you just never hear about them because the lack of technologies.
