I am sure this topic will be controversial but I have noticed that back in the 60's and 70's, African Americans did some great things in terms of entertainment. I personally love shows like Good Times, Sanford and Son, etc. These shows were great in terms of quality but also in terms of being truly "American", not strictly for African Americans. In terms of music, the same thing applies to a lot of Motown songs, some incredible music was created by African Americans and these songs were simple, good and they seemed to appeal to the entire American population regardless of race. Lately, it seems like most AA shows have become something that only African Americans appreciate and understand and they tend to emphasize on stereotypes, ignorance and stupidity as if that is something cool. I was listening to a song from the 70's by the Cornelius Brothers called "It is too late to turn back now" and I was amazed that they actually spoke normal English in those times and used proper grammar, the song is amazing and people of all races can relate to it. On the other hand, I was listening to a rap song yesterday by some Soldier Boy and I can't even understand half of what he is saying, the lyrics make absolute no logical sense and he just repeats the same stupid lines 10 times, over and over. Very sad!

I think he is talking about the quality of a lot of shows that air on UPN. The show's that show black baffonary, shucking and jiving, and living up to steretypes. We talk about this a lot at the barbershop, but with the powers that be owning the networks its little that you can do.

I think his question is what happen to the good shows? and why are these shows supported.

I think the quality of TV as a whole has gone down as it relates to standards.

I see more than just blacks being stereotyped. I have seen many more whites being stereotyped moreso than blacks. To be honest there are more white shows of baffonary than anything. Most of the sitcoms on TV are white sitcoms.

Also, those shows( black or white) are on TV because that's what people want to see.

I guess, these shows are supported because a lot of people want to watch this type of garbage, some of these young kids have been so conditioned to accepting any crap that is put out and I think it is simply because they do not know any better. Although, I wanted to talk about African Americans in particular, this phenomena applies to Whites and other races as well, it seems like this country has become dumber and stupider in the last 20-30 years.

How can the country be dumber and more stupid? With the advancements in technology and medicine it's not possible.

I would say maybe a certain segment of the US population enjoys these such shows. The same folks might think posting on the internet is dumb, but who am I to judge what is dumb or stupid?

It's all about your perspective and perception.

If the children are conditioned, why are they? It seems there is a lack of parenting in that situation. TV is not to blame.

I watched Rambo and all the other violent movies growing up as well as listened to NWA, Getto Boys and other "hardcore" rappers but I knew(due to my parents intervention) that it was only entertainment.

Notice I said "parents" not parent or mom.

For the record if you are a U.S citizen or a resident you share the same U.S culture. There is no sperate culture for blacks/whites/etc... Within that culture people do things different according to background and exposure.

The old r and b/soul artist like the Cornelius Bros. and SIter Rose need to come out of the woodwork and scold the youth of America and some facets of the Media like UPN for the mockery and travesty they have made!

I have to disagree! I am not exactly "White", I am Portuguese/Italian but culturally I am probably White. Although I cannot categorize every single member of any given race, many African Americans follow their own culture and do not know much about and/or refuse to accept or embrace "mainstream" American culture. I have met very few African Americans who even know who Jimi Hendrix was, or even Charlie Pride, two of the greatest African American musical minds of all times in my opinion! Another example, I remember an African American family at the Family Feud show and they did not know anything about music outside of African American music. There was a question about singers, and I think names like Paul Simon, Phil Collins and Christopher Cross came up, they did not even know who they were.

Ok, I get where you're coming from. You're "white" and you basically have an issue with blacks. So you get on a mostly white website to bash blacks hoping to get other whites on board. thank god you only have 8 responses.

I guess the folks on CD are much smarter than I have expected. They see through your BS. At least that's what it sounds like to me.

You say you don't meet many blacks that know who Jimi H. is, there are 40 million blacks in America i am sure you have not met all of us. And how many blacks do you really know?

Also do you think all whites know who every black artist is? I'll bet they don't. And that's fine. That's not a insult to whites because they don't know every well known black artist. The are very poplular RnB singers out today that I would not know who they were if they were standing in the same room as I. What does that say about me? Nothing at all.

So what's you ppoint with starting this thread?

I would never in a million years go on a "black" message board and make an attempt tp bash whites, it's just not in me to do that.

Bottom line is you have issues with blacks(like many whites do) and this is the best you can do........Very sad.

Instead of knocking us why don't you try and understand us. Blacks do a excellelent job of embracing mainstream/white America.

Incase you don'y know this country was built on the backs of blacks and free labor and blacks have been involved in every war the USA has been involved in and many times begged to be aparrt of the war.

Spike Lee just put a movie out about 4 black solders that get trapped on the front lines during WW2.

WTH are you talking about?

the shows these days are modern day minstrel.

shuckin and jivin.

it is bafoonery that they want to see.

mainstream culture has been doing it for years. back in the golden age of harlem, whites "slummed" it by patronizing black establishments. now with the technological advances, people can see the "show" from the comfort of their home.

i think the 60's and 70's had a positive representation because of the emerging idea that black was beautiful and that black was equal to white. eventho the civil rights era was trying, the immediate effect was a more eloquent, productive black population. there was pride in being black and beautiful.

since then, certain periods of time have been marked more with turbulence than with smooth sailing. the effects of drugs and drug sentencing in the 80's created a particular cultural, urban scene. the general public ate it all up. and now thats what the market wants.

the good thing is that entrepeneurs like P miller(master P) and denzel have joined forces to create BETTER BLACK TV. its happening, but the effects of the 80's gave birth to a particular image of balck america that pervades to this day.
it is doubly "cool", and evidence of how "those" people act.

this topic is more comlex. but these are just some rudimentary thoughts.
