I tried to refrain commenting so early, but just can't.
I love this place. Yes.
If it isn't, it's still the most beautiful place with the most options, in the most ways.
I'm so lucky I was born here. And wherever I go, I will always be an American, and will gladly benefit and suffer for it.
Cool thread, being it isn't some holiday when all of a sudden people start thinking about it.

Maybe we can get started by somebody giving us a few examples of freedoms that Americans have, that people in most other developed countries don't have.
I think we have some freedoms that other countries don't have (guns come to mind). OTOH, we don't have freedoms enjoyed by other nations. We pretty much need a permit for everything. Want to sell your goods on Main street? Permits. Want to gather? Permits. Some countries don't have to worry about this stuff (thinking South Korea), tho, I can't say if I really care. Either way, they're freedoms we don't have.
The only type of freedom that it comes close to freest is “economic freedom”.
But even for economic freedom, it’s not the freest.
There are many freedom indices. Some of which are:
1. Index of Economic Freedom 2009 (by Heritage Foundation and Wall Street Journal) http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking.aspx
Hong Kong is no. 1. Singapore is no. 2.
2. Economic Freedom of the World Index 2008 (by Fraser Institute)
Hong Kong is again no. 1 (8.94), compared to Singapore (8.57), no. 2. http://www.freetheworld.com/release.html
We may have been once upon a time. But now, I don't think so. As someone stated, we are over-regulated. I'm wondering how long it will be before we need a permit to take a dump and how much it will be taxed.
