California contemplates ultimate reform - no welfare
OUCH....this will hurt millions of very poor, destitute people...
Will the government just let people starve? Turn to crime? Riot in the streets?

I'm not so sure that this would be an effective way to make up the $24.3 billion. They may well incur $24.3 billion in additional costs for police, national guard, fire, prison, looting cleanup, etc. I think we all know what would happen...

Bus tickets out of town are cheaper.
I'm not entirely joking because my own mother remembers seeing ad's on busses in Michigan back in the 40's telling people that California was where it was at and encouraging people to relocate for better 'opportunities'.

Ok, no not really.

Doomsday Journalism, with no basis at all, that I can find in the story.
Would somebody please go back and read the story and tell me exactly who has proposed that CalWorks be completely eliminated?

About $467 million in cuts will occur if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal to scrap the state's welfare-to-work program goes through, he said.
The governor's proposal to eliminate CalWORKS - the state's largest cash aid to children and families - would save the state $1.4 billion for 2009-10, and more than $2.4 billion annually thereafter, according to the Department of Finance.
On Oct. 1, when the program would be abolished, more than 1.4 million recipients statewide would lose temporary assistance for food, shelter, clothing and welfare-to-work support services such as child care. Countywide, more than 102,000 people would be affected, Wert said.

What's this I hear about California's K-14 education? Are they actually paying for 2 years of college or does this mean something else?

Google /proposition 98 college/ and see how much of it you can understand. It looks like there is an inclusion in the state education budget to pay part of all of fees for community colleges. Currently, community colleges are getting almost 10% of the state budget for K-12.
