Commentators are discussing left and right about angry and rude outbursts from Kanye, Serena, Joe and many others, do you think we are turning into a self-centered, rude and narcissistic society? Are we only out to see what we can get and not what we can give?

I recall my parents and others of the older generation talk about inviting guests for dinner and playing an instrument whether it be a guitar, a piano or a sing acapella. Now it more like, lets invite so and so for dinner at such restaurant. I can provide so many examples.

I was reading this article from CNN regarding this epidemic that is over taking America. Please read.

Commentary: Joe, Kanye, Serena -- aren't they special? - CNN.com

Do you feel we, as Americans, are becoming more self-centered? What are your thoughts.

You're comparing angry outbursts to going out to dinner instead of inviting friends to your home, which is somewhat odd. I for one DON'T HAVE ROOM to have friends over for dinner. It's not a "self-centered" issue.

I think people are more so then the past, but I don't think the example really fits.

Having social events with many people are a different issue, I think it's been slowly declining for the reason of interfacing with so many people on a day to day basis. I know on busy days I can see and be confronted with over 1,000 people, and when I get home I get jumped on (literally and figuratively) by everything. I think Alvin Toffler really hits it in "Future Shock" (written in the 60's) where you deal with such an overwhelming amount of people you don't know, you can't know even if you donated all your time, it's hard to have any time alone...let alone really take enough time to re-balance and decompress yourself even at the end of the day.

Why... you... selfish little... !!!

Actually, I don't know whether the behaviors the OP are referring to have to do with self-centeredness, or over busyness, or what.

I believe we are a very selfish and myopic society. I also believe we are, for the most part, very disconnected from each other - at least on a personal level.

And I think it's getting worse.

Just go back through this forum, and see now many people are demanding that the law of the land and official government pollicy conform perfectly with the poster's own personal self-interest and prejudices and religious faith.

I don't think much of the dinner example and self centered really;but i agree that people are more self center now days. That is the main reason so many want things for themslves personally instaed of the nation overall. They call some greedy but don't mind taxing others for their gain.

Well-stated. I don't think there is any better way of putting it...

maybe it's a matter of being selfish longer than in the past since it takes us longer to grow up today

For the most part, yes, though they are still people who volunteer.

Here's a question, if you volunteer because it makes you feel good, can't one still see that as "self-centered"?

Well said!
Especially the disconnected part. People talking everywhere, but we have a lack of effective and meaningful communication.
