Agree or no? If no, please provide a sound reason why so we can have an intelligent debate.

Personally, I believe everything we do is a choice, how we react to every situation is a choice, etc. I've yet to find evidence proving otherwise.

EDIT: I should clarify this by saying that no, as children we do not always have a choice. But as adults we do.
EDIT2: Since people are already taking this to a literal extreme, let me clarify that THIS POST IS ABOUT DECISION-MAKING, not whether or not you have the choice to make your heart beat or not. Holy ***** people.

Some choices you make limit your other choices in life. For example (and this is not a judgment), if, as woman, you make a choice not to work outside of the home, should you be widowed or divorced at 40 with school aged kids and no job experience, your job choices and thus being able to support your family, adequately, are extremely limited. Should you chose to do something stupid, say on Spring Break, and you get arrested, down the road it may limit your career choices. I think people should look at the choices they have and determine if the choice they intend to make, may limit other choices 20 years down the road. In other words, the choices we make should be to maximize future choices, not limit them.

I have to agree. We can pretty much do what we want, but there are consequences, upsides and downsides, other people to consider....good thing we have laws to discourage more people from making the wrong choices.

We have many reflexes and learned responses that we have no control over. Take breathing for example. Even someone thats suicidal can't choose not to breathe. If we had to choose to do everything man would have died out. I actually think we choose very little. People often act without thinking.

That is very true. I see life as a decision tree. You start as a child, during which time you do not have the ability to make all of your own choices. But as we get older the decision tree becomes more and more under our control. When we reach adulthood it is totally under our control.

With each decision we make we change our future possibilities. Also remember that not making a decision is a decision.

Ummm...right. Our body functions precisely because we have no control over its functions. If we had to spend our day telling our hearts to beat we'd get nothing else done.

Every act requires a thought, whether it is blatantly conscious or not.

What of a crazy person? What if you blackout? ....acting on impulse? If its an unconsious act it cant be choice. People run on autopilot a good majority of their day.

I think the OP was referring to actions and decisions, not bodily functions.

Well he said EVERYTHING!!! I was also refering to other nonbodily functions such as all reflexes. But yes, all decisions are choices. Im pretty sure thats what decisions are, but we can and do act without them.

Lol well thats not much of a debate. If you make a decision you make a choice. They have the same definition. I thought the thread was about can a person act without choosing/deciding to. Also i never said anything about we dont make our heart beat.
