That doesn't even make sense. Should we all stop driving because we might run over a kid? That's public. And the danger is all the more real.
If a kid is in a public library alone, they should be old enough to have been taught right and wrong and responsible enough to listen to their parents. If not, then no...no one has any obligation to protect your children if you're not willing to be there to do it yourself.

It would be easy for them to be exposed to things they should not be--unless we remove it from them in public. If their parents WANT them to see it, they can do so at home.
Is public nudity acceptable? What about public drunkenness? Why do we bother with "rating" movies?

Of course I make a point not to run over kids. I love children, and would never do anything to hurt them. To answer your questions, yes, public nudity is acceptable. The human body is a beautiful thing, so no reason to hide it. Public drunkenness, well I will let my screen name answer that one for you, but I do not see how that relates to the debate.
Correction, there are laws against public nudity, but there are NOT laws against public drunkenness, at least not were I live.

Why on earth would anybody think that anything should NOT be allowed in a public library?
Should there be a general principle that nothing should be allowed in a public library if parents get upset over it? Do libraries not only have to be G-rated, but also stock only materials that conform with the political opinions of the parents? Or religious view of the parents?
Yeah, I say we have porn in the public libraries.
But make sure we place it all right near the children's sections. That way, when the perverts get themselves all cranked up, they can just pick up a little kid, drag him/her into the bathroom and go to it.
And while we're at it, we should probably have open kegs of ice cold beer on tap. Wouldn't want to deprive anybody of anything while at the library.

You mean, you can't figure out a way to punish "creeps", so you punish the children instead? And, yes, withholding or denying educational tools to the curious is a form of punishment.
If kids don't know what hookers are, why does it matter if the kids see them? If they DO know what they are, they will just laugh at them. Kids are kids.
I think you want to deprive an entire generation of children access to educational tools and concepts of American freedom, in order to prevent an isolated incident of one "creep" trying to cop a picture of a dreaded nipple. Why does sex terrify you so much, and make you cower in fear and dedicate your life to crushing the free expression of it?
Start teaching children at the age of ten that the primary purpose of the government is to police people's private behavior and to censor thoughts and ideas. So they will grow up to be good little soldiers in the war against people who are "different". Your tax dollars hard at work creating the police sstate that you so ardently desire.
Our library has two computer rooms, one with restricted access and one without. In order to log in to a computer, you have to have a library card. Only adults can get library cards, so children must bring a parent in order to get one. The parent sets the type of access for the card.
The definition of pornography according to the Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary:1. the depiction of erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement. 2. material that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement. 3. the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction.
So, if you don't mind having the person next to you getting excited and releasing thmeselves in your presence I guess it's okay. Just watch out it doesn't get on you.
I think museums and libraries are wonderful places and it's wonderful that you can see art and read about it. You can even learn about pornography there. They also have books on drugs and death, but I do not really want myself or my kids to be subjected to watching other people having sex, doing drugs, or murdering people. I think these thing are a little personal and do not belong in a public place.
