Since this thread is obviously a thinly veiled anti-abstinence education viewpoint
Well, I just want solutions that actually work.

Considering that Canada has a teen birth/abortion rate less than half the rate of the US, it would be quite foolish not to look at their system.

You and me both.
DD just told me that there are so many pregnant girls at her high school that they should consider putting in an OB/GYN office there.
She was being sarcastic on the latter part of that remark, but truthful on the former.

What it kind of boils down to is this:

What's better; Teens having sex, or teens having protected sex?

Abstinant only programs do not work.
Reproductive Health | Full text | Religiosity and teen birth rate in the United States

The thing that drives me bananas is that we knew this 20 years ago and we have come full circle. That is an awful lot of money to waste on what we already knew.

I think that it is imperative that we stop operating on what people/kids should do and begin to operate with what is.

I agree, the whole "knowledge is power" thing seems to pretty much have gone by the wayside.
Pretty sad commentary on the state of American society today.

The whole thing boils down to the "abstinence" program that most schools teach, which obviously does not work. Even Bristol Palin spoke about the abstinence thing being a colossal failure.
My own daughter, whom I taught about these things, had to go through the abstinence program at school. She discovered a LOT of untrue things that were being taught, went on the CDC website, downloaded and printed the correct info, and took it to the person that was teaching the class.
The teacher informed her that the CDC was wrong, and she was correct.
Can you believe it? AND, I could not take her out of the class, unbelievable!
I suppose it is safe to assume that most people have some form of health insurance these days that cover birth control...so why are ours still much higher? Are they estimating this by race, social status(es), or what?

Interesting. No, I can't believe it. I suspect this particular school is feeding propaganda to its pupil.

In my time, sex-ed wasn't mandatory, it was a supplement to Physical Education. Yes, as in P.E. We were not taught to not practice sex. We were taught what it was and how it affects us. I don't think the word "abstinence" was thrown about...no, I'm not old. Okay, not that old. They had a simple analogy; you don't have to deal with sex if you didn't want to. We also researched on consequences and hypothetical situations post intercourse. I don't think that helped much. I am positive I am the only one in my graduating class that hasn't reproduced.

It is.

There is an organization in New York that was started by a woman who was/is a lawyer. I'm trying to recall this from memory. The focus is on keeping the girls that have a kid in school to graduate and dealing with schools, finding childcare (huge). She has kind of created a network of sorts. The name of the game is to keep them from having a second child. If the girls have a second child, they are done. It is so much harder.

I mention this because at point A information was forthcoming and std's and pregnancies dropped and included AIDs prevention and leads to Point B. Whatever little Mr. or Miss Morality (or by the second backlash against feminism) decided to insert the abstinance only program-and fund it well. They are still, bless their hearts, trying with women who are going to have abortions must watch this or must have a sonogram before said act.

Now we are back at point A. Meanwhile back at the ranch, where the real people live, we have to have organizations that are not trying to prevent the first pregnancy, but the second. And a rise in AID's cases.

The problem is them-those girls getting knocked up. They come from single parenting. The problems are with the mother.

The problem is the ignorance of the adults. They do nothing more than run around in circles and throw tantrums "I-want-you/they-should-you-be-responsible-because-I-don't-have-2". That was 2, not to.

When I was idealistic, watching the circles was fun. Now, not so much.

Now, I dream of running around the US to all those who are seeking God-cookies and smack them with the world's largest fly-swatter. Yes, naked and singing "Feelings, nothing more than feelings".

You are entirely correct, it WAS propaganda, when the ones teaching the propaganda were called on it, they threatened to flunk my daughter.....and also threatened to put it out that I opposed their whole propaganda program.....this town is not that big, and a lot of the good folk in this community know me.
I told them to bring it on. Thank goodness since all this happened, the school board removed this program, which was called "Brazen".

Several years ago while visiting some relatives in the northwest AR. area I was told that the local high school had a daycare/nursery room for the student mothers to bring their little ones to each day. They wanted to keep teen moms in school so this was needed.

Personally I think America can learn a lot from Canada and other countries. Why we’re stuck on the same old path and never learning from mistakes is beyond me!
