It sounds like they went way overboard on this one. It reminds me a bit (although this NYC case is far, far more extreme!) of when we put a printer cart out on the sidewalk in front our place in San Francisco when we were moving; a city employee driving past yelled at my husband, told him it was littering, and told him to call someone to bring it to the dump. It was a perfectly fine furniture item in decent condition; we didn't WANT to bring it to the dump, we didn't have a car to bring it to a Goodwill, and didn't want to wait around to schedule a formal pickup. We brought it out later that night and it was gone within ten minutes. Classic city recycling at its best. I understand why cities don't want organized groups of people taking away recycling and costing the city potential revenue, but to slap a guy taking -- with permission, no less!! -- an air conditioning unit is bureaucracy at its worst.
Its all about revenue & by him taking the ac is like stealing from the city of ny that already steals from you. I dont agree with the nyc dept of sanitation but the crazy law is the law. The fine & car impound is discusting but thats more money for the city...UGH!!!!
