Patents are bad news in general. All the data I've seen supports the idea that it hurts everyone, even the patent holder (if they use them; only patent trolls win).

Researchers achieve 'holy grail' of battery design: A stable lithium anode
Its great to look toward the future for advanced tech. However, I often believe current tech has not fully matured prior to moving on. Current battery technology is all chemistry. Take Welcome to Renaissance Charge - for instance this charger uses negative resistance to resonate (ping) electrolyte to charge rather than force electrons into it. As a nation we are throwing thought to be bad batteries the merely need chemical restoration. Furthermore, this charger excited battery chemistry to a point a normal rated battery may operate safety at higher [new] rated capacities.

On the same site one can see the 10 Pole large DualPolar Magnet Motor that is sufficiently capable of running an EV with fewer batteries without interruption because this machine can indeed charge while in motion. Bedini is already doing it. Both the r-charge and the dual polar system are spin-offs of N. Tesla work.
