For crying out loud! I was feeling bad enough about having four fridges and five cars, but now you have to pile on about my glass doors. Geesh.
Ha ha! I have 3 sliding glass patio doors in my house.
Guess I may as well just stop recycling, turn up the thermostat in the winter, and should probably just throw away all my plastic bags instead of reusing them.
My Dad doesn't have a lot of frozen food so he fills the freezer with newspaper. So that way he isn't cooling a large empty space.
I am with Mack Knife on this one - it is all about control.
And as stated, Fridges don't use a lot of power compared to other items in the house.
He would do better filling it with jugs of water. Paper doesn't retain its temperature well. Water, once frozen, would go much further in assisting the freezer with not needing to run.
You also forgot - large families may need two fridges. I buy things in bulk and a freezer in the garage helps with that. I almost want a fridge that just has the fresh food side and then get another one the same size for the freezer part....
I'm all for green living and saving the environment, but at the same time I still have to live...
Large families aren't eco-friendly for more reasons than refrigerators. Unless the people living under your roof are not your children, in which case you could be saving energy by sharing a space with others.
I have to admit I do have one fridge in the galley and another in the cabin of my private jet. It's pretty inconvenient to go to the galley for a cold beer on my way to give a speech on climate change.

Our second one is only 6 years old, and is in the family room, not the garage. We use it all year for just drinks. Our main refrigerator is 18 years old and no doubt uses far more energy than the smaller, newer one. The Energy Guide Sticker that came on it said $36/Year. The big main one is next on the list to replace (So far in 2014 we have bought new stove, washer, dryer, dishwasher, and freezer) but it still works just fine. The article is misleading, because , people could have 4 refrigerators and still use less electricity than someone with a jetted tub, swimming pool,electric heat, old TVs, computers left on 24/7, tanning beds, some cable boxes, and air conditioners.
As the freezer gets emptier, I move the jugs from the fridge part to the freezer part, or as the freezer gets filled back up, I move jugs from the freezer to the fridge. That way, I have a maximum amount of thermal mass filling the fridge.
