Maybe this scene sounds familiar: It's Thanksgiving, you're sitting and watching the football game, and you want a beer. So what do you do? If you're like many Americans, you won't go over to the kitchen fridge, which is now crammed with leftovers. Rather, you'll trek down to the basement or out to the garage to the second refrigerator (aka, the "beer fridge").

Why it’s not okay to have a second refrigerator - The Washington Post

Never had one.......never had a need!

The $100 a year+ would aggravate me when the damn thing would be empty most of the time!

Here's another reason not to have a second fridge, besides the energy wastage:
It makes you look like an over-consuming Ugly American. Maybe you are one. But you don't have to advertise it.

I'm sure the WP didn't include the many Americans who don't live a block from the grocery store and have to drive miles to the nearest grocery store. That ends up costing much more than having several extra refrigerated appliances at home.

I have an undercounter beverage cooler in my kitchen.

Water, beer, wine, pop - all goes in there. It works well.

The article failed to mention that those 20-year-old refrigerators were and continue to be workhorses that far outlive today's models. So sure, old refrigerators may cost more in electricity usage than new models, but new models need to be replaced more often. Do the math. Which is really more economical?

Excellent point. My last "new" fridge only lasted 9 years before it completely and utterly failed. Had to be replaced with a new model a few months ago.

These kind of articles make me want to run a space heater the closet. They also breed ecoterrorists who might sabotage an old fridge by sticking an icepick in the coils releasing all the old fridge freon and causing the compressor to overheat and catch the pump oil on fire leading to a fire that cant be stopped because we'll all be indoors hiding from the UV rays from the widened ozone hole. Is that what you want WP?

Reads more like a guilt trip than anything. If someone thinks global warming is bunk they sure aren't going to care about spending $140/yr on a second fridge; not quite $12/month.

On the high end.

Besides, you could say that about most anything. You want to do something really beneficial for the environment and your wallet? Get rid of your second car.
