19-year-old Boyan Slat has unveiled plans to create an Ocean Cleanup Array that could remove 7,250,000 tons of plastic waste from the world’s oceans. The device consists of an anchored network of floating booms and processing platforms that could be dispatched to garbage patches around the world.

I planned on rigging overage oil tankers with gigantic trawl nets.

Good for him, but it sounds more like "something relatively easy but no one bothered to do" rather than some breakthrough.

well. Really there is a little (meaning A LOT) more to doing this.

But ANYTHING towards a start is a VERY Good Thing.

So Good on That.

Of course hammering down on the Cause First (ie, stop making MORE mess) same as Nukes -- is required.

Second there are life forms developing in this mix, now, as "life finds a way." So "Do No Harm" becomes something not fully considered.

The overall trash column goes down around 100 meters, although they are correct -- the larger "floaters" tend to be within a few meters of the surface. So this is focused on the larger up-top stuff. Which may be also better caught from source as large Harbor Nets or Waterway Screens.

But good on what they are doing or attempting to do.

so, once the device captures "7,250,000 tons of plastic waste", what do we do with it?
Dump it back in the Ocean?
what does that solve?

Just maybe we shouldn't dump " 7,250,000 tons of plastic waste" into the ocean to begin with.

That.

Also, how much fossil fuel will need to be burned to run this array?

There have been many schemes on how to clean up the gyres' that exist in the worlds oceans, but that's just it, they are schemes. The vastness of the areas in question are mind boggling when you figure there are 314 million square miles of ocean, and it's not just the gyres' that have this problem. More power to him if he can come up with a viable way to accomplish this, but for now it would be nothing more than an exercise in futility. The problem needs to be stopped at the source, I have now idea of how that would be accomplished.

Just think of a garbage dump the size of Alaska, and that just the Pacific Ocean garbage patch.

All that plastic are high energy hydrocarbons that can be converted for reuse of burned for fuel unless they are Chloro or Flouro carbons. Burning the latter creates toxic and corrosive fumes.

That makes a lot of sense, seeing how plastic is made from oil.
