Hi, I am new to this forum but we just came back from Tulum and thought it was amazing! I recently heard though that people say its dangerous to travel to Mexico despite the fact that we did not experience anything negative. Any thoughts? Is it the next Costa Rica?

No way is it the next Costa Rica, who has for many years forged a country-wide ecological effort in order to preserve the lovely surroundings. They realized early that tourists will pay for their eco efforts, which in turn leads to jobs, income for the country as a whole.

No such luck with Mexico.

I've been to Tulum and to Costa Rica. Tulum is indeed beautiful. However, Playa del Carmen, the closest city is fraught with crime. There is also poverty. When I got off the bus from ruins tours in PDC, a child ran up and grabbed my boxed lunch out of my hands...was so glad I had not eaten the chicken breast. At least the little one got that for a meal.

Default I see!

That is what I wanted to find out. For a first timer it is easy to get caught up in the positives. I think it has potential, but as you said, there needs to be a greater effort put into the local economy and green efforts on a whole especially in neighboring cities. Sorry you lost your lunch.

Sorry you lost your lunch.

I just decided not to eat it, was going to toss it when the child grabbed it....that's why I'm glad he got a meal...

I would say Tulum is a dangerous place. Especially if you are alone at night with a big tourist camera in your hands. But there is also a lot of safe places since it's really turistik.
