I constantly see memorials and other miscellaneous ceremonies that release balloons. I cringe whenever to see one. Can't help but wonder where all that plastic and mylar balloons end up. In my eyes it's littering. Why not candels or some non pollution causing ceremony.

Littering and dangerous to wildlife, they get tangled up in the strings/ribbons, eat the balloons etc.

Technically, it's not litter until it lands, then it violates littering laws.

In Florida and a few other states and some cities, releasing balloons is illegal because of the threat they pose to wildlife.

That's good to hear that it's illegal in areas. Like it said I cringe when I see it done. I can't imagine a small group of people who are honoring someone who had died being fined or whatever for doing this but I just wish they would think about it and find another way to honor a loved one.

We're supposed to smile about something that is both bad for the environment and kills wildlife?

How much wild life is killed by balloons? You know you have bacteria and mites living all over your skin---how much harm does it do? Is it worth worrying about?

The US is 5.3 x 10^15 sq ft. A deflated balloon is 3 x 10^-1 sq ft. How many deflated balloons does it take to significantly impact the environment?

For comparison, we lose 4.2 x 10^8 sq ft to the bulldozer each year. It would take 1.4 x 10^9 (that's 1.4 Billion balloons) to cover that area. Your house and yard deprives Nature of valuable habitat-- probably more than all the released balloons put together every year. A postage stamp lot is ~3000 sq ft-- or ~9000 deflated balloons.Do you have any plans to give it up and return that land to MotherNature?

Still think it's a problem worthy of our consideration? Do you think an Act of Congress is necessary to deal with it?

Well, USFWS seems to think it's worth worrying about:

And power outages have very real economic impacts:

lots things that are littering (in my opinion) are not considered a violation.
and if they are violations, i have never, ever heard of any fines levied.

1. balloon releases.
2. free newspaper in driveway delivery.
3. yard sale signs (in the right-of-way) that stay up for months. (political and real estate signs are exempted)

there are more, depending upon where you are and the local regulations.
