I knew the New Economy creates new jobs but this takes some doing; Compost Attendant. This is the position our township is advertising to fill. Of all things, you'd think a compost pile is the last place you'd need an attendant.

Large composting operations are not simply rotting piles. The mix has to reach certain temperatures to "cook" pathogens, the balance of carbon and nitrogen has to be correct, and the piles get turned with heavy equipment for more even composting. The chicken broiler houses around here compost the culls and chicken litter. Done properly, there is no odor and the resulting composted litter is valuable as a soil amendment.

I actually built three 8x10' bins to hold our farm animal manures, sawdust from my mill, and whatever else I can throw in there to compost. Flip them between bins with the tractor front bucket. Works great.

Here they operate front end loaders to mix it and move piles around. They also load trucks with same equipment. Another job that could match that description is working the weigh station where the trucks are weighed at entry and exit with the difference in weight being paid for at same station.

Our compost attendant makes only residents deposit garden waste (leaves, branches, leaf clippings) and take compost. He prevents landscape businesses and non-residents from using the facility.
