I see Amazon delivery trucks driving their Dodge Sprinters at full throttle up and down the road all the time. You would think Bezos who signs up for every social cause that comes down the pike would actually do as he says. He does not have to wait for new laws or mandates. Just do it.

They did it!
Amazon ordered last year 100,000 electric delivery trucks, doubling the fleet in Europe and North America.
The order represents the largest purchase of light-duty electric vehicles (EVs) in history, and a turning point for the EV market which will now likely see fleets electrify faster than ever before.
The order is part of The Climate Pledge, Amazon's commitment to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early.

UPS has ordered 100s of Semi-Trucks from Tesla, as well.

Important thing ahead to build less-and-less NEW Internal Combustion Engines going ahead. Old existing ICEs can taper off from major use, to part-time, to stand-by as Electric picks up the major miles.

They are where they're practical. Not every task or location is practical for current electric vehicles. When people are making those kinds of decisions, they aren't thinking with emotion, but with actual requirements. Other than the few things done for PR stunts, decisions are made on what works and what's cost effective.

This is a press release, not a purchase order. Who is building these 100,000 commercial electric trucks? Rivian? The same company that Amazon is an investor in? Talk about publicity. The same company that has been promising for years but has not delivered a single light duty truck to haul lumber from the Home Depot.

"First, in its 10 years of existence, Michigan-based Rivian has yet to produce an EV for the masses."

This press release provides food for people to come here and claim "they did it!"

No need to attack the messenger. All you needed to say is that you disagree and provide info why.

All what we know is that Amazon has ordered, and Rivian has committed to designing and building the first 10,000 for Amazon by 2022, with another 90,000 due by 2030.
Wait and see.

BTW: your link doesn't work.

Just like hydrogen fueled vehicles and Liquid Natural Gas vehicles, the economics will drive the decisions.
Based on cost and availability of the fuel, refueling spots, the cost and weights of the storage devices (cylinders or batteries), how that extra weight effects the range and payload thus the economics.

It will be a very very slow road <pun intended> to convert away from petrol-engines, taking decades, not months.

Right. Just wanted to ask the same: aren't many fleet vehicles in the US already using alternative fuels ?

Intra-urban delivery trucks is one of the niches that EVs are perfect for: drive all day with motor only consuming "fuel" while moving, and then re-charge all night.

Over the road hauling is a different matter. Despite unrealistic claims to the contrary, it remains to be seen if profits can be made using big rig EVs....One possible remedy to the most obvious drawback is having pre-charged battery packs available at pit-stops along the way, interchangeable with the spent packs...That'll take some organization to get established, but don't forget, there were no gas filling stations before the Model T came out either.

In regards "publicity" & virtue signaling-- spot on. ...A major (if not THE major) reason Tesla has been unable to match production to demand is that Musk never planned for production-- His real goal was to take financial advantage of govt funding & tax breaks to make his profit. He didn't really care if anybody ordered one or not.
