KATHMANDU (Reuters) - A young Nepali climber is seeking to popularize a toilet fashioned from a plastic bucket with a lid to promote eco-friendly climbing on Mount Everest.

Hundreds of climbers flock to the world's tallest peak at 8,850 meters (29,035 feet) every year, with many simply squatting in the open or hunching behind rocks as the Everest base camp has no proper toilet facilities.

So this guy caried a toilet up to the top. pooped in it, and carried it back down? Would it have been easier t take a ziploc bag up there, wait till it dried, zip it, and stow it in his pack?

Why not make climbers buy a permit to make the climb, and use the money for clean up.

I don't believe so. Doesn't it take about three weeks for climbers to acclimate their bodies to the altitude, going from base camp to the summit? With hundreds of base camp support staff, not to mention climbers, that's a whole lot of ziplocs. Not very efficient...

Expeditions do pay quite a substantial fee (I think it's around 100K) to climb.

It's wonderful that this climber is trying to clean up the Mountain. She is considered a holy place to a lot of people.
