So I thought I did well conserving water this month. I turn on the shower to get wet, turn it off and lather, then turn back on to rinse. I do one large load of laundry every week, I only flush for # 2, etc...

My water bill was $3.74. So I did pretty well, right?

Under 'Metered Usage', it says my usage was 925 x 1 GAL units. Does that mean I used 925 gallons of water in one month? And that was conservative?

Here is a test that tells you how much water you use. Try it and see if it is close.

Water Science Questionnaire #3: Water use at home

Another interesting site:
American Water Works Association – www.drinktap.org > Home > Water Information > Conservation > Water Use Statistics

I've heard that people use anywhere from 70-200 gallons per day. If that is true then you are doing great.

The chart indicates that my family of 3 probably uses between 100-125 gallons per day. Based on our bill, I'd say that's pretty close.

Wow, didn't know the dishwasher used 20 gallons a load. I always thought I was wasting water by washing by hand.

Dishwasher does not use 20 gallons. At least not a modern Energy* unit. It is more like 4. I think ours is 2.5.

Could be.

I'm also not too sure about the clothes washing machine. We've got one of those ultra-high efficiency LG front-load models. If I remember right, it's only supposed to use about 3 gallons per load.

Well, since I live in an apartment I have to use the appliances provided to me. It's amazing that water is so cheap? 925 gallons is $3.74? No wonder there's a fountain show at the Bellagio in the middle of the Nevada desert...

Seems like it, I was able to register an avg 24 gal per day in August.

This article (among others) is interesting, in that a lot of the gray water could be caught and used for other purposes (watering, flushing toilets, etc...).

Using the toilet...try a 1/2 flush and a full flush if you follow my thinking. Works for me and still a clean bowl. (you don't want to have any clogged pipes). Steve
