Another Gore gaffe -- in recent presentations, he had been showing a startling graph which showed a ceiling-high spike in disasters in recent years. Gore, of course, said the disasters were due to man-made global warming.

The data came from the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED). Just one problem.... the Center had stated in reports that many factors which were unrelated to climate caused the enormous rise in reported disasters.

Gore has pulled the graph from his presentation.

Quote:
Dr. Pielke quoted the Belgian center: “Indeed, justifying the upward trend in hydro-meteorological disaster occurrence and impacts essentially through climate change would be misleading. Climate change is probably an actor in this increase but not the major one — even if its impact on the figures will likely become more evident in the future.” http://www.cred.be/documents/Gore_Pulls_Slide_of_Disaste.pdf (broken link)

He's showing fires at that point in the presentation. They are man made at least to some degree at least in parts of the U.S. Over the last century the U.S. has been very successful at containing wild fires in forests and other places. These are natural occurrences and were actually healthy for the forest prior to mans intervention, they quickly moved through a forest and would not kill everything (e.g larger trees etc). Basically pruning out the underbrush and small amount of fuel.

The issue is because they have had so much success in stopping these fires over the last century you now have an enormous amount of fuel on the ground. As the fires move trough a forest they burn much hotter and take a lot longer to extiguish by themselves and cause an enormous amount of damage basically killing everything. The resultant area is sterilized and devoid of anythiog alive and takes many decades to recover.

When you said that, I thought no, he has gone on to all disasters. The chart is labeled Century of Weather Related Disasters. However, on again listening to Gore speaking, he does say fires which leads one to believe this chart is all about fires.

From the article, click on an enlargement of the chart or goto The New York Times > Science > Image >

As the chart shows, the chart is of all types of natural disasters. Hmmm, another misleading goof by Gore in his presentation.

It's also an issue of shutting down logging and forest management, which has caused so much fuel to build up for fires they are quite bad when they happen...

Actually, Cred had stated in reports that many factors which were unrelated to climate caused the enormous rise in reported disasters.

According to CRED one of the main reasons for the spike in reported disasters ......
the increase of global communication.

Makes sense - think about how much communication has improved and the world has become "smaller" in the last 30 years.

Quote:
Over the last 30 years, the development of telecommunications, media and increased international cooperation has played a critical role in the number of disasters that are reported internationally. In addition, increases in humanitarian funds have encouraged reporting of more disasters,
especially smaller events. Finally, disasters are the convergence of hazards with vulnerabilities. As such, an increase of physical, social, economic or environmental vulnerabilities can mean an increase in the occurrence of disasters. http://www.cred.be/documents/Gore_Pulls_Slide_of_Disaste.pdf (broken link)

Shame, this has already happened. Most people I talk to either believe that he is the wrong person to preach global warming since his personal life bears no resemblence to his preaching or that he lacks any type of scientific qualifications to make his statements. There is also likey another political agenda present.

Well of course he lacks scientific qualifications. He's a second generation politician.
