So, do we worry or not worry?
All in one day....

Anxiety over swine flu grows

Not worry:

One day after saying he wouldn't travel in tight quarters because of the swine flu scare, Vice President Joe Biden rode a train Friday from Washington to Delaware.

Known for speaking freely, Biden told NBC's "Today" show on Thursday that he had urged family members to avoid airplanes and subways for fear of contracting the H1N1 flu virus. World news Feed Article | World news | guardian.co.uk

Vec101- these reports are not conflicting imo, the first is talking about quantity the last is about severity. Truthfully, no matter what anyone says on this message board or on the news, none of us know where this thing is going to go. What I do know is that worrying about it to death will not help, regardless of whatever this situation may evolve into.

Well, H1N1 has finally been found in a herd of pigs! Trick is, the herd is in Canada, and it appears that the pigs might have gotten it from the human.

My question is, since the H1N1 contains human, avian, and swine flu, isn't it possible that it didn't originate in pigs at all but in one of the other two species? I was hearing today that it's a misnomer to call it swine flu because that's only one component.

But the genetic makeup is similar to swine flu viruses present in U.S. pigs since 1999.

It's the Pork Industry that is pushing the name change. But I don't know what good that will do now that we gave those poor pigs in Canada a dose of our swine flu.

Wasn't anyone associated with the pork industry I heard saying that, though I'm sure they'd be happy if it were changed simply because there are so many people ignoring the science and deciding that eating pork gives you the flu. Of course, there's a lot of people who are perfectly healthy flooding emergency rooms wanting to be "checked" to see if they have swine flu when there's no reason on earth to think they might, making it hard for the people with real emergencies to be treated.

The "poor pigs" in Canada - along with the Canadian farmer who traveled to Mexico City and back and is thought to have infected them, bypassing "our" swine flu entirely - are apparently all doing well.

If anything, the evidence available so far in the public domain indicates that the strain of H1N1 working its way around may be capable of jumping back and forth between the human and swine species. The other point is that most of the reports so far indicate it probably originated on a hog farm but has since morphed into something new.

Isn't riding an airplane different from riding in a train because the jet is pressurized because of the altitude? I don't know, just asking. Looks like some people are actually looking to jump on Biden rather than discuss the flu.

As for schools, in DFW, Texas, one student had the flu and they closed THE ENTIRE school district. When one student was sick in a Dallas school district, they only closed THAT particular school. Why the overkill in DFW?

You KNOW the media will jump all over that and there will be possible lawsuits if it spreads and they did not act. Damned if you, damned if you don't.

Here's an article on who was pushing the name change. I still see "swine flu" all over the place though so I guess it's pretty hard to change something once it's named.

Is swine flu's name hogwash?
