Most of my cleaning products are sage for the environment with the exception of a disinfectant cleaner, bleach, and my dishwashing detergent. Is there a green disinfectant out there? I did a search and nothing at all came up. I can't believe it hasn't been discussed.
I don't use it often but I use it on doorknobs, toilets, and after I have used raw meat.
Cheap, pure grain alcohol is the best disinfectant. We use Vodka and buy it in a large bottle (gallon?, not sure) and then pur some into a spray bottle and keep it by the sink (the big bottle is under the sink with other cleaning stuff).
Use this to do a quick clean on your hands, wipe off kitchen/bath counters, doorknobs, etc - no smell, no residue.
We use a small amount of apple-cider vinegar mixed in with the water in our floor steam cleaner. This obviously has a smell factor, but cleans very well.
We use Ecover brand products for our dishwasher and washing machine. We get them at Whole Foods, you can probably look online where else.
We don't use any toxic products at all, except for the bi-monthly capful of bleach down the drains to kill the septic tank bugs (we use a non toxic septic product additionally each month).
Tea tree oil can be toxic to cats. In very weak dilution (100:1) it appears safe, but higher amounts can be bed for kitties. Because cats clean and groom themselves so much, it's easy for them to pick up a little too much on their fur, then ingest it.
The risk will depend, of course, on where you use it, and how likely it is the cat is in that area. Might check with a vet, just in case.
Physan 20 is a verified biodegradable disinfectant from the folks that distribute "Spray-n-Grow." IIRC, the original Lysol (not the consumer product) was biodegradable as well. We're talking disinfectants of such a high reliability that they are used by the CDC and in bio-security applications. Many other products may or may not kill certain bugs and/or are not tested.
Melaleuca products have one. It is called Soluguard Botanical Disinfectant. It is derived from Thyme and has an herbal scent to it. It is just as effective as the chemical based versions seen in stores.
