We are a young family of 5 from salt lake city, ut and may be moving to NC. My husband is interviewing out there next week in Winston Salem, where his office would be located. We want the cool, urban feel of living downtown. But we have three young kids. Just wondering if it's safe and clean around there. I have heard the downtown elementary school is awesome. Any advice or suggestions on places to look at renting would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

It means...NC has no cool parts....Stay put and enjoy the scenic parts of SLC.....Very Scenic and absolutely breathtaking there....Why on earth would you leave that and come to NC.....Blows my mind.

The reason for leaving SLC is the advertising jobs are extremely limited.

Either renting or buying...there are condos and apartments downtown, in the West End which is next to downtown, in the Arts District along Trade St, in West Salem which is next to Old Salem, and new loft condos adjacent to the Arts District on the northern edge of the new research park downtown.

Thanks, wsnc62! We looked at those cool lofts in the art district-they are amazing! Do you feel the area is safe for young children? I know the children's museum is right around there but are there lots of other things to do as well? I am a stay-at-home mom and we love to go out and do all sorts of funstuff and explore new cities.

Thanks so much for your feedback!

If your kids or you and/or your husband like Baseball you might be interested in the Winston-Salem Dash. They have a brand new ballpark in Downtown W-S. They're a Single-A team for the Chicago White Sox

There is also Old Salem, which was mentioned. Old Salem Museums and Gardens | Home Page

W/S downtown isn't "cool" as in "big city cool" but it has improved a LOT over the years. Most people who have their kids in the downtown school drive them there from the suburbs of W/S.

Is it safe? Well, I wouldn't let my kids walk the streets alone but I wouldn't do that in any city because the world is full of mean people now.

I personally would live out of the city limits and rent until you decide which area you like. But that is my two cents. By the way I was born in W/S and been here all my life. We live in South W/S in Davidson Co. I have 1 child left at home, senior in high school this year. Then my husband and I are moving to TN or somewhere else where it is cooler.
