There are tons of Non-chain BBQ restaurants in Lexington. That's not Greensboro/High Point, but only about 20 minutes from there. They have a wide range of different flavors and sauces.
In Greensboro the best BBQ place is Stamey's on High Point Rd.
If you take a short (30-45 mins) drive to Asheboro, there is an awesome place called "Something Different". The food is terrific, the service is fantastic and the price is very reasonable. Make sure you try "The Chocolate Volcano" for dessert. Its on the same road as the North Carolina State Zoo is on.
Mario's Pizza next to Pet's Mart off of Wendover Ave is the best place I've found for pizza.
