Can anyone recommend a company who sells and installs heating and air units at reasonable prices. Ours is possibly 15-20 years old and recently freon began to leak from the system (The actual leak location will be determined this week). We are in the process of determining the extent of our problems. So, I am planning for the worst.

At "15-20 years"... I'm going to assume that in addition to the outside condensing unit (and matching coil) you will also need to replace the inside furnace blower portion due to that age.

Be prepared for the other work you're also likely to need as part of the project:
some sheet metal work to adapt from chassis size differences, maybe a new return air filter system,
routing the PVC pipe used for flues, duct insulation, new thermostat and maybe even a humidifier too.

This easily gets you into the $7000+ neighborhood; maybe more depending on other stuff.

Insist on the SAME well known brand name (eg Trane, Lennox, Rheem, etc) being on every major component
that gets installed and that whichever company you use for the WHOLE project be well established.

Additionally, don't cheap out, especially if you plan to remain for years to come. The money you saved will be spent on future repairs.

Unfortunately, a 15-20 year old unit is not worth repairing to that extent. Hopefully it's something simple and cheap (like a leaky fitting), but if you're talking about replacing compressors and blowers on a unit that old, you should probably just bite the bullet and get a new system.

well you got your moneys worth. If the leak is in the coils. Forget it. Get a new one. Is this just for air or is it for heat also. This will drive your cost. Had mine replaced a couple years back. About $8000 that was for a combo (heat and air). I went with a Carrier puron system. Does about 2000 sq ft one level. But, shop around and do not be pushed. Understand what they will be doing.
