Folks Trader Joe's may be opening in a new shopping development next to the Shops at Friendly Center. Friendly Center already has a Harris Teeter which is the largest Harris Teeter in the store's chain. Whole Food Markets will also be opening at Friendly Center next year. Three major grocery store chains will be clustered together but much of the excitement is about Trader Joe's. Currently the closest one to Greensboro is the one in Chapel Hill.

Builder hints at Trader Joe (http://www.news-record.com/content/2011/12/14/article/new_shopping_center_eyed_for_property_at_corner_of _friendly_avenue_hobbs_ - broken link)

That's good news. It'll be nice to have Trader Joe's and Whole Foods in the Friendly Center area.

Wish EarthFare would open up a second location at Quaker Village where the Fresh Market used to be. It'd be nice to see something move in there to help revive the village center.

Whole Foods and Trader Joe's will be opening on the Fresh Market's home turf. I guess we take the Fresh Market for granted because it was founded and headquartered in Greensboro. I remember the first store back in 1982 and now there are over 100 stores across the country. People in other states love the Fresh Market more than we do. But without a doubt Trader Joe's is more popular. Both Trader Joe's and the Fresh Market have hard to find items. The only difference is that TJ's is cheaper. Because TJ's have simple stores that can sell items at cheaper prices than the Fresh Market. The Fresh Market spends a lot of money building extravagant upscale stores so their prices are much higher.

But the Friendly Center shopping center will have 3 major store chains. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and don't forget about the Harris Teeter thats at Friendly Shopping Center. Its the largest Harris Teeter in the United States and has items and services that other Harris Teeters don't have. There is a sushi bar, olive bar, large wine selection. I think shoppers will have 3 good grocery store options at Friendly Center. It will be the only shopping area in Greensboro that will have 3 major grocery stores together like that and they are all higher range price stores. All three of those stores are only two miles west of downtown, so downtown residents won't have to drive far. But downtown is getting its own grocery store as well. Deep Roots is opening a full service grocery store with a bakery and deli next year.

Its great that Trader Joe's is coming. Now if only Greensboro can get a Cheesecake Factory.

I wonder how Harris Teeter feels about Whole Foods this .I read that HT has an exclusive for groceries at Friendly Center, but that Whole Foods got around that by taking part of the Sears building; since Sears owns their building, the exclusivity agreement didn't apply. Whole Foods will be a lot more visible than HT is. Trader Joe's apparently wouldn't officially be in Friendly Center, so Harris Teeter's exclusive wouldn't apply.

It may not be a bad thing for Harris Teeter, though - if people associate the area with high-end or exclusive items, perhaps all three shops can thrive.

Harris Teeter will be just fine. Not everyone shop at stores like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Many people still like their traditional super markets. Each of the 3 stores have their own special niche so all three will thrive.

Not a fan of Cheesecakes by Alex?
People getting all wound up about yet another big box store while the independents barely get a nod. Kind of heart breaking.

Whole Foods will be good to knock HT's prices on healthy brands in line. Prices on the healthy brand of cereals are nearly double what Earth Fare & Whole Foods charge.

The curb side of QV is doing quite well and really doesn't seem to be missing FM at all. The back side where Fitness Today was located is a different story.

Yes, that's true. Seems several businesses up front are doing ok.

Fresh Market used to be one of my favorite stores. Both Lawndale and Quaker Village... I liked the smaller size of the stores. The atmosphere, etc. Tried the new format at New Garden. Just wasn't the same, although glad for Fresh Market's expansion success.

The parcel of land in question was once to be developed into upscale townhomes, which doesn't belong to CB&L. Assuming this is the land TJ is looking at it supports emelvee's point.
