Goods-producing jobs rose 6% in the Triad between April 2011 and April 2012, helping it far outpace the state and national rates. Economists offer several theories for the growth, including steeper manufacturing declines for the area during the recession and a partial return of some industries such as furniture making.
Hopefully, if the three million jobs make it back from China, a good portion will end up here. Gosh knows Guilford County is spending a ton of money to enhance the Airport and infrastructure to attract new businesses/manufacturing, etc.

The Triad area definitely has an advantage, I think, in attracting these jobs back to the states. I dearly wished Martinsville and Henry County, VA could do the same. These guys up here are so backwards in their thinking on how to bring economic life back into the area that they just don't seem to see the forest from the trees. I know with Stanley Furniture moving to High Point, it's bringing positive economic influence into the Triad area, but it pretty much puts the nail in the coffin into Martinsville, VA. I have a friend who works for Stanley Furniture in their I.T. department, and he's losing his job in January. I don't know if he was offered a chance to relocate to High Point or not, but I don't know what he's going to do now. He's bound and determined to never leave the area, but finding a job he can support his family on around M'ville is going to be tough. I definitely wish him the best.
I'm glad I'm moving into the Greensboro area later this year, I'm looking forward to it, but my heart will still be tied to the Martinsville/Henry County, VA area and I'll always push for them to improve their economic situation.
Martinsville is a beautiful area. I've known several people who moved down from there, or commuted from there over time. Seems like after 1998 the jobs started collapsing like flushing a toilet.

It first started with DuPont closing, and it never recovered after that. DuPont was one of the biggest employers, then Fieldcrest a few years ago really put a big dent in employment. The last straw was Stanley Furniture closing the manufacturing part of the facility a few years ago and moving the main office to High Point.

Only a small fraction of those may make it back. When you have a country where the wage is so low that employing people is cheaper than buying machinery that is very hard to compete against.
