Figures that a US gov't agency, in a computer dominated world, would still be overflowing in paper I better understand the horror stories my brother-in-law related, leading to his early retirement from that sector.

The problem being getting someone to digitize all those files. If you think about it just one misplaced electronic file and you could really foul up someone's life.

I'd hate to be called upon to pull someone's record if you know it's in one of those teetering piles. Rule is - it's always the last record in the pile

I understand it's more a manpower thing. All those records should have been digitized and fed into an more easily accessible database years ago.

Agreed; it would have been more simple to keep pace as opposed to letting it pile up and play catch up. Seems a firm who does this sort of work said it would take up to two years to get all files digitized.
Oddly, we hear about big bloated government and when a story such as this pops up I wonder where it is.
