It isn't easy to do yourself. The spray can stuff wouldn't do well on a tree I don't think. It isn't fluffy like what is used on trees. I love flocked trees with colored lights. It looks like a snow covered tree and is gorgeous. I'm from TX originally and you could get them at local nurseries and sometimes Lowes. Haven't been able to find one here except for the artificial type.

They had quite a few flocked artificial trees at Garden Ridge. The mess that would create makes me cringe.
