Winston-Salem-based BB&T has moved about 500 employees into a building near Piedmont Triad International Airport which was formerly occupied by an American Express call center.
According to a company spokesman, about half of that number represents new hires.
The bank expects to have 800 working there by year-end.

I really detest the poor writing and editing in the Journal.

2nd paragraph:
Spokesman David White said Wednesday that the bank has moved 500 employees
into the 390,000-square-foot building at 7701 Airport Center Drive in Greensboro.
About half of that workforce represents new hires.

Therefore some undefined number close to half of that 500 are having their
work location moved to the airport location... not the 500 reported.

At least they didn't bury the accurate detail at paragraph 9 as they usually would.

I must say that Sunny's headline is also misleading. The jobs are not being 'shifted' from one city to the other either. The new hires would be shifted from the unemployment line or a previous position, which is not necessarily within the bank itself, to the renovated former Amex building near PTI.

BB&T's departments are spread out and not centralized to Winston-Salem, with divisions in Wilson NC, Virginia, Florida, etc. The mortgage department is strong to Greenville SC, which was noted in the announcement as being subject to cuts like B0fA and Wells Fargo. The primary reason BB&T located to this building in the first place was because it was available and empty at the time, keeps the bank from spending on newer, more expensive construction, and by not accepting incentives, does not lock them into a long term lease by guarantee of hiring so many employees in a certain timeframe. Smart.

The recent first round of hiring at the GSO facility if you didn't have mortgage experience they didn't want to talk to you. Amex still had a few years remaining on the building lease so it is a sub-lease for the time being.

Too bad they didn't get some employees that actually know what they're talking about. Trying to get a loan from them and I can't believe the incorrect information I was given. My advice - avoid them like the plague.
