Does anybody have any insight on the commute from Hickory to Statesville and back? My husband has a professional job in Statesville. I am a SAHM. We have been trying for months to find a suitable house with a good school assignment in Statesville--to no avail. We are considering buying a house in Hickory and having my husband commute to Statesville. Making that kind of commute is not necessarily our first choice; however, we see properties in our price point in Hickory with good school assignments, and we know Hickory has more to offer than Statesville. My husband works close to the 77/40 split. It seems like his biggest issue might likely be the morning commute and making his way out of Hickory and onto 40.
My husband has spent the past seven months doing a 30-minute one-way drive into Statesville on 77, so he does not necessarily mind 30 minutes spent in the car. Plus, he is a transplant from Wisconsin, so driving in the rare snow and ice event here does not faze him. We are most interested in where the traffic gets congested, what kind of back-ups occur, and the time it would take him to make it through Hickory and onto 40.
If anybody has experience with this, please share! We would love to know what others think of the drive. Thanks!

From your post I gather that your primary concerns are schools and affordability. If so, then Hickory is not the only option. As Mr. Rational suggested, Clemmons/Lewisville are definitely an easy commute, but you might also consider Davie County (especially the eastern side--good schools there), and northern Mecklenburg County (Mooresville, Davidson/Cornelius, Huntersville). Nothing wrong with Hickory, either, but it seems odd to focus only on that area when there are other good options to consider.

Mooresville is in Iredell County.
