What's with all the tall tales of her working as a stripper and speaking 5 languages? True?
Oh yeah. She was a prostitute on a few occasions, too, and if that's what you want to take away from her life, go for it. She had a wild early life and she did a whole lot and saw a whole lot. She was the first black streetcar operator in San Francisco when she was still in high school. She was also US Poet Laureate, was nominated for a Pulitzer and an Emmy, and did an awful lot for not only people of color, but for lovers of literature and the people of Winston-Salem.
I knew this was coming........the woman is dead, for heaven sakes. And we can't gracefully remember the good things, and let Angelo go with some dignity. We live in a whistle blowing, flip flop wearing, me world, don't we? Quick to judge, and hard of understanding. It's so easy these days to spew from the comforts of a keyboard.

I think she'd be okay with us remembering all that she was, not just the glossy parts. Would she ever have become such a high-impact artist without living through some rough stuff? I just don't quite understand why you'd go STRAIGHT for the seedier parts of her past. It's a mighty pedestrian way to remember such a woman.
I didn't bring up the "seedier" parts of anyone's past, you did. Review.
You review. That wasn't aimed at you. I should have said "I don't understand why one would go straight for the seedier parts..." Another poster asked if she'd been a stripper. I wrote that, sure, she was a stripper and more. These aren't secrets, and for an artist such as Dr. Angelou, they are all part of a long a storied past that made her who she was. My response was aimed at that poster who brought it up to start with and my point was that while you shouldn't deny someone's past, a few chapters don't define a long and storied life.
