Hi I have been living in NJ for a long time and really want a change. I have never been to Winston-Salem NC
but have heard the cost of living is much more afforable than NJ. Can anyone give me advice on where to live, just want to rent right now. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

There are oodles of places that are cheaper than NJ (almost anywhere); you should never move somewhere you don't know anything about simply because of the cost of living. Nobody can give you advice on where to live because you don't give any criteria in what you're looking for except that it's "cheap", in which case I would say look into Mississippi or Louisiana which are the cheapest states to live in.
You should plan a visit to anywhere before deciding you are moving there. Do you have a job lined up? If not, have you researched the job market in W-S for your area? Know anybody? I think it's pretty irresponsible to move somewhere solely on the fact that "you've heard the cost of living is lower than NJ", because that's true of almost anywhere in the US.
Maybe you should do a little more research on Winston-Salem specifically and why THAT city is where you want to be, rather than "because it's not NJ." Then people can answer your questions when you have said more specifically what you're looking for.
Thanks for your comments, I am in the process of looking for a job there. I also plan on taking a trip there soon.
I do know someone there but they just moved themselves.
I have lived in Winston-Salem for nearly 20 years now. It is very affordable, whether you are looking to rent a house, townhome, or apartment. I don't get on city-data often. Please reply if you still need information.
I'd say be sure to rent (as opposed to buying) so that you don't overcommit yourself to the new neighborhood, or city for that matter. Also, when you think you have a place picked out it would be good to ask about the specific area you are considering before you sign the lease--this site is a good place to get feedback. Personally I know Greensboro areas but not W-S, though there should be several posters on here that can give you more specific feedback as you get closer to a move. Good luck!
