Perhaps Hanes Mall is overdue for renovation. I have not been there recently. But at one time I believe it was the largest enclosed mall in NC, except for perhaps now Concord Mills. But it seems to have all of the major dept. stores in the region, including Belk, Macy's, Dillard's, and JCPenney. So I am sure it still serves a need. Charlotte offers higher end stores such as Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, but those may cater to a more limited higher income demographic.
I shop at Nordstrom so it's not at all limited to a higher income demographic! I mean, there has been a Nordstrom in Durham for several decades if that tells you anything. It's a department store...Belk and Macy's compete with it in Atlanta, but individual locations of any department store can and do vary.
I was at Hanes this past Friday (much longer than I cared to be); though I was in the newer part the entire time I saw only 2-3 vacant spaces with what I would consider a decent amount of foot traffic for the early afternoon.
while i do love hanes...Greensboro is seriously picking up alot of high end buisness at friendly. Its like everyday there is something new at friendly,Lulu lemon greensboro, South Elm and cheese cake factory etc... speaking of wealth, ive never seen a city under 300.000 with so many high end car dealerships. Like lamborghini aston martin and ferrari to name a few.
Agreed. Friendly Center stores are a good mix of high and lower end stores. It's like if Hanes Mall and Reynolda Village shops were in the same location. That actually makes more sense economically, in my opinion. I think that's one of the reasons why Greensboro feels more inclusive. Yes, there are quite a few high dealerships here. I just checked a snapshot of both cities economies and G'boro has more than double the amount of people working in upper management and/or engineering than Winston. Winston's biggest economic industry is production. That explains the economic disparity despite both cities being of similar size.

And High Point has the only Bentley dealership in the Carolinas. I was always puzzled by that

Really had nothing to do with the growth of High Point as much as it had to do with old money, the same old money that keeps the downtown the dead nucleus that it is. At one point the Rolls/Bentley dealer was the only one on the east coast between NY & FL.......so I was told.
