Hi everyone , I recently moved to Charlotte from FL and my daughter may now have the possibility of relocating to Winston-Salem. She will have a job already , located in the 27103 zip. Any advice on where to look for housing? Where to avoid? She is in her early twenties , no kids and wants to rent as inexpensively as possible. She may (or may not ) have a boyfriend coming with her but other than that won't know anyone. Is it an easy area to meet people? Anywhere in between Charlotte and W-S that won't be an extremely long commute but puts her a little closer to us?

thank you!

How much is "as inexpensively as possible"? My first suggestion for someone her age is downtown W-S...lots of new apartments and condos, restaurants, bars, art galleries, etc. It may be out of her price range, however. Ardmore and West End are 2 other neighborhoods near her work and downtown.

As to somewhere between W-S and Charlotte, Clemmons is a suburb on the west side of W-S that would put her closer (but not close) to Charlotte. Salisbury and Statesville are between W-S and Charlotte, but thats a much longer commute than I'd want...45 minutes or so.

If she wants to meet people and make friends, she's better off renting in W-S and not commuting from somewhere between Charlotte & W-S. It's not that far a drive to Charlotte to visit family. I agree, Ardmore is a good area in the zip code you gave us. When I think of Clemmons, I think more of a family-oriented community. I don't know how suitable it is for young singles.

Here a website that lists lots of activities in W-S including those for young professionals. Winston Salem, NC Events Guide - Arts, Dining, Entertainment and Community Calendar in Winston Salem, Piedmont Triad, NC

Thank you for the suggestions, I will pass them along. Carolinadawg2 , when I say as inexpensively as possible what I mean is that she isn't concerned with having the fanciest apt there is. She would rather have flexibility in her monthly budget and the ability to save money. I'd say she is probably looking in the $500-700 month range for a one bedroom.

There are some really beautiful apartments downtown, but most are out of your daughters range without roommates. West End and Ardmore are both potentially good bets. You have to be a little careful because Ardmore is big, and contains both some of the most charming areas in Winston and some areas that I wouldn't want my daughter living in. The same is true to an extent in West End.

Perusing Craigslist, I saw a few cute 1br apartments in West End that are within that range, and they seem to be in good areas.

She should look for a share situation.

For $500 per month (incl utilities) she'll have many choices.
Where? Start with being close/convenient to the job she lines up before arrival.
